Description
A needlepoint sampler, in many colours, done in cross-stitch on loosely woven ecru linen. The sampler has a double-stitched border with stitched bars between each row of letters (A-Z) beginning with capital letters, followed by numerals from 1 to 10, then lower case letters (a-z), then numerals from 1 to 6, then large capital letters (A-F), and ending with “Serena Matilda Potts 1822.” The piece was originally framed in a simple brown wood frame with a parallel line (wood grain?) texture. The paper backing has “Serena Potts’ work born 1812” handwritten and a “Royal Picture Gallery” (Calgary, Alberta) framer’s sticker.

Description
A white cardboard card holding a set of needles of various sizes and shapes with the use of each printed below. Flap of clear, stiff plastic stapled to front covers needles. Two semi circular, curved needles ("mattresses seats"), one long, heavy, straight needle ("chairs sofas"), one short needle with three cornered point ("fur, coats, gloves, leather"), and one long, heavy needle with flattened, bent point ("sacks, bags, hampers"). Missing are needles for "carpets and heavy work", and "tents, deck chairs, canvas". Needles pass through elliptical holes in the card and are stitched through two pieces of thin black plastic on back to be held in place, .9 cm hole punched at top of card.
