The Alpine Club of Canada, the national mountaineering club, was founded in 1906 by A. O. Wheeler and other like-minded climbers. The club espoused scientific study and exploration, cultivation of art, public education, acquisition of climbing skills, and preservation of natural areas within the mountainous regions of Canada. Through a national executive, local sections and volunteer committees, the club provided climbing camps, clubhouse, huts, and publications, including the Canadian Alpine Journal. ACC expeditions and projects resulted in pioneer exploration, first ascents, and included mountain warfare training during the Second World War. In recent years, the club's membership has increased dramatically with the popularity of climbing and its programs have evolved to serve the needs of unguided climbers using sophisticated technical aids.
Scope & Content
Includes ACC history and Canadian Rockies.
Notes
There is an annotation on the first page that describes the scrapbook as being created by S.H. Mitchell, a club secretary, and pertaining to the clubs early years.
Scrapbook contains 5 inserts, the first being an envelope with newspaper clippings, and the other 4 being identical copies of The Alpine Herald from November 1907. The inserts can be found on page 1, 27, 189, 219, and 265.

History / Biographical
The Sydney Vallance (Fryatt) Hut is located in Fryatt Valley of Jasper National Park. According to the Alpine Club of Canada's website and their Fryatt Hut Info Sheet: "The idea for this hut was born in 1968 when the Vallance family made [a] donation to the Alpine Club of Canada for a backcountry hut. Fryatt Valley was quickly chosen, the location of the Club’s General Mountaineering Camp eight years earlier, and a site with excellent mountaineering but a very long approach. The hut was constructed in 1970 and turned over to Jasper National Park for operation. The hut was initially abused, to the extent that Parks eventually removed the interior facilities. In 1991 this hut, along with Mt. Colin and the Mt. Alberta (Lloyd MacKay) Huts, was turned over to the ACC to operate. The Club has upgraded the outhouse from pit to fly-out barrel system and installed an efficient coal-burning stove to replace one which was removed in 1991. The hut is named for Sydney R. Vallance, Q.C., ACC president from 1947 to 1950, who died in 1979."
