History / Biographical: The Mather family were boat house operators at Banff, Alberta, Canada. William Mather, 1868-1927, emigrated to Ontario from Scotland in 1880 and came west ca.1888 to work for the Eau Claire Lumber Company on the Spray River near Banff. He worked for Raymond M. Rooper's boat house business on the Bow River and, in 1899, purchased the business. The Mather business included steamer tours in the summer and also involved winter sports on the Bow River. William Mather and Margaret McRavey Mather had four children, Jennie, Leslie, Allan and Hazel. With William Mather's death in 1927, the family incorporated its interests as the Bow River Boat House Limited, with Allan Mather as manager. The operation expanded to Lake Minnewanka in 1939. History / Biographical: George Murray, 1904-1968, and Gertrude Murray, 1891-1979, were residents of Banff, Alberta, Canada. George Murray was an employee of Rocky Mountain Tours and Transport Company from 1941 until 1957 and was later employed by Brewster Transport Company. The Murrays were friends of Major F. V. (Frederick Victor) Longstaff, 1879-1961, a mountaineer, architect and historian from Victoria, B.C.

Scope & Content: Fonds includes photographs of Rocky Mountain Tours buses at various locations; photographs by F. V. Longstaff, several of which are inscribed to Mr. and Mrs. George Murray; Longstaff Christmas cards, n.d., 1944-1960; and an article by Longstaff titled "Historical Notes on Glacier House." The article includes photographic illustrations of the Lake O'Hara region and the interior of Abbot Pass Hut.

Topics include New Years activities, day to day life, Banff events, visits from friends, weather, hockey games [on the radio and live], curling, skiing, cameras and photography, events and people in Concord, world news, radio programs, the Winter Carnival, cleaning and household chores, Catharine working with the Red Cross and instructing a weekly art class, skiing on Sulphur between the Upper Hot Springs and the river, Pete making posters for various organizations, community events and programs, painting, gardening and yard word, errand trips to Calgary, judging an art show at the Auditorium sposored by the Horner Co. in June, Catharine's brother Russ and his family coming to visit in late June-late July [included stays at Skoki, Bow Lake, Lake O'Hara, and Temple], the Governor General touring Banff in July, Banff Indian Days, driving up to Sunshine Lodge and beyond to the edge of Porcupine Valley as part of a survey crew with Fern Brewster, the Calgary Stampede, day trips around Banff National Park for sketching and picnics, trips to Bow Lake and Temple Mountain [usually for a week at a time], matters pertaining to the store, moving a shed from behind Annie White's house closer to the river [used to store cars and later a stagecoach], Catharine going to Concord for a month [mid-November to mid-December], making the annual Christmas card, and various Christmas/holiday activities and parties [including Pete and Catharine's first Christmas tree since before the war].
