History / Biographical: The Vaux family of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania were photographers, mountaineers and scientists. Mary M. Vaux, 1860-1940, George Vaux Jr., 1863-1927, and William S. Vaux Jr., 1872-1908, were the children of George Vaux (VIII) of Philadelphia. They were all involved in photography in the early 1880s and were members of the Photographic Society of Philadelphia. All three were taking photographs when the family made its first trip west in 1885. The first Vaux family photographs of the Canadian mountain west were made in 1887 during a summer trip along the Canadian Pacific Railway to Glacier House in the Selkirk Mountains of British Columbia in 1887.; The family made frequent visits to the Selkirk and Rocky Mountains over the next two decades to study the Illecillewaet and other glaciers, photograph, paint and climb. George's and Mary's photographic work centred on the mountain landscape, while William's concentrated upon the movement and physical features of glaciers. Due to the size of their large format cameras, the two brothers took most of the photographs during these trips and Mary was responsible for all of the printing. William Vaux died in 1908 and George did not return to the Canadian mountains after 1911; however, Mary Vaux Walcott returned to the region virtually every summer for over forty years. Negatives include both glass (962 items) and film negatives (1740 items). Textual records are exposure records, original negative envelopes and publications.; Textual series consists of six series: I. Trip Series, II. Correspondence Series, III. Publications Series, IV. Physical Description: 31 commercial postcards

History / Biographical: Annie (Creagh) Wiseman (1891-1972) was born in Deptford, England, where she married Stanley Wilfred Ernest Wiseman. The couple had one daughter, Ethel, before moving to Winnipeg. The family returned to England following the outbreak of World War I, in which Stanley served as a Private in the 61st Battalion, Canadian Infantry. Annie and Ethel later returned to Winnipeg, where Stanley joined them following a serious injury which he sustained in active duty. In Winnipeg, Annie and Stanley had two more children: a daughter (Hilda) and a son (Stanley). Stanley Sr. worked as a foreman for Canadian Pacific Railway, which enabled Annie to travel throughout the Canadian Rockies and other regions by train for free or a reduced price. Annie collected postcards from her travels, which included numerous visits to Banff National Park. Annie, Stanley Sr. and their two youngest children permanently settled in Victoria, B.C. in 1935.

Scope & Content: File consists of 31 postcards collected by Annie (Creagh) Wiseman between ca.1920-1940. Postcards pertain to natural views and tourist attractions in Banff, Lake Louise, the Great Divide, Kicking Horse Canyon and other nearby areas. Some postcards are annotated with correspondence sent between Annie, her children (including Hilda and Ethel), and friends of the Wiseman family.

History / Biographical: Lester Gus Zarkos, b.1921 Brandon, MB. His parents and younger sister arrived Banff 1926. Lester's parents had the cafe on Banff Avenue (old location - Grizzly House) and lived upstairs. Parents separated. Lester's father Samuel Zarkos, d. 1933 (buried in old Banff Cemetary). Lester moved with his mother Alice to Chicago and lived between Chicago and St. Paul's MN until his mother died, ca. 1935. Lester joined RCAF as a rear gunner. Never saw action and returned to Banff following the war. Lester worked at Banff Cafe as waiter. Lester and his uncle Paul Zarkos of Calgary opened a deli on Banff Ave and operated it for a number of years. Lester relocated to Calgary in 1956 and worked as waiter, maitre d', and returned to Banff in 1966 where he operated Banff Delicatessen on Banff Ave. He married H.G. in 1951. H.G. was from Nanton, Alberta and she worked at the Banff Post Office. Following Mount Royal Hotel fire, the family left and returned to the space - Welch's Chocolate Shop. 3 children: Paulette Jean, b.1952; Leslie David, b.1953, d. 1974; Carolyn Anne, b. 1955.

History / Biographical: Edith Berenice Dunsworth (nee Stenton) was born in Banff on May 20, 1927. Berenice is the daughter of Joseph Alexander Stenton and Elizabeth Florence Stenton (nee Williams). Berenice had one sister, Marguerite Flora Lineker (nee Stenton). Berenice was married to Dr. Brian Dunsworth (19??-2014). Berenice's grandparents were George and Flora McKenzie and George was likely a son of the Stanford family. Berenice remembers her grandparent's house was next door to the Stanford house. Berenice's other grandparents were Percy and Elizabeth Williams who settled in Bankhead, near Banff, when they arrived from England ca.1910.

Scope & Content: Album consists of 94 pages of b&w photographs; 1 carte des visites and postcard. Photographs feature locations such as Banff, Bankhead, Lake Louise, Marble Canyon, Vermilion Lakes, and other Rocky Mountain areas. The album has some pictures of the Stanford house in Banff as well as family, friends, and events. Of note are photographs of "Peter White" and "The Artists' Cottage Mrs. Drummond." Photographs are mostly annotated and tipped into album pages with photo corners. The inside cover of first page is inscribed: "To Beth from Rose Aug 20/21. Some photographs are missing from some pages and a few loose photographs are tucked in behind others.
