Topics include leaving Honolulu for Tokyo via the Canadian Pacific Steamer "Empress of Japan" in late March, life aboard ship, comments and descriptions of the ship and other passengers, weather, books Pete and Catharine are reading, arriving in Tokyo, extensive details of most everything Catharine comes into contact with [this was her first visit to Japan and drew a lot from her grandfather's experiences - it was not Pete's first visit], meeting their guide Mr Miyaoka, going to art shows and museums, local cuisine, architecture, music and entertainment, sightseeing, visiting temples and gardens, shopping, sketching, taking Japanese painting lessons, photography and cameras, going for walks [both during the day and at night], going to the movies [also includes comparisons to Hollywood movies], visiting Nikko for a few days in mid-April before returning to Tokyo [while in Nikko Pete and Catharine watched a local festival, although she does not say what the festival was for], dinner parties, leaving Tokyo for Kyoto in late April, descriptions of the trip and countryside from the train, comments on Japanese naval and military activities, their time spent in Kozu on the way to Kyoto, the trains they travelled in and other travellers, farms, the various towns and villages passed [mostly comments on the train stations], Pete's day trip to Kobe to meet with a friend he'd met in Banff, planning the next leg of their trip, touring around the Kyoto area, visiting local landmarks [including gardens, temples/shrines, and factories/specialty shops], making day trips to nearby landmarks and towns [most notably Nara to see the tame deer and to the Imperial Palace], Pete developing films [photographs] in hotel room bathrooms, events and people in Concord and in Banff, going to Kobe for a few days before returning to Kyoto in early May, leaving Japan for China on the M.S. Choko Maru in mid-May, and arriving in Tientsin China.

Scope & Content: File pertains to 14 letters written by Catharine Robb Whyte to her mother, Edith Morse Robb from November 1931 to January 1932 and primarily includes Peter and Catharine's trip to various locations in Jamaica. Other topics include the trip to New York before setting sail and meeting the Moores, Georgia Engelhard, and visiting Carl Rungius' studio, people in Concord, details about the ship to Nassau, the hotels, the landscape, and meeting and staying with various people in Jamaica [including Elaine Strong, Edward Moseley, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Soloman, Sydney Farington, Dr. Graham Bruce, Sybil Burnside, Mr. and Mrs. Gus Ely, Olive Michener, and Fred Armbrister], and various Indigenous portraits of Peter's getting special notice [one from the American Foundation of the Arts].

Notes: Please note: language pertaining to Indigenous Peoples, people of colour, and those of the Jewish faith used throughout is outdated and offensive. Some items were stapled together and therefore scanned together as one document. Included is one typewritten transcript of a handwritten letter with content that has been edited. Letters are all handwritten and include some hotel and steamship letterheads. Some letters are marked with a small x in pencil, indicating where Jon Whyte made notes for use in his project "Catharine Robb Whyte, Peter Whyte: Commemorative Portfolio," originally published in 1981. Some letters also have numbers written in pencil crayon, believed to be from when originally processed.

Scope & Content: File pertains to 34 hand-written letters written by Catharine Robb Whyte to her mother, Edith Morse Robb from October 22, 1937 to February 14, 1938. Topics include arriving in Vancouver from Banff in late October, details of the drive to the coast, taking a small road trip down the coast as far as California before returning to Victoria in mid-November [including visits to Yosemite and the Redwood forests], descriptions of various accommodations in Washington and California, weather, meals, going on a weekend trip from Victoria to Campbell River, booking a trip to Europe on the SS Vancouver of the Hamburg-American Line [leaving from Vancouver bound for Switzerland via the Panama Canal and the English Channel] and leaving in early December, details of life and activities aboard ship [the boat only carried 25 passengers], discussions of Pete and Catharine's plans to purchase a new Ford car upon returning to North America, Christmas and New Year's Eve activities and celebrations on board and in Concord, the other people on the boat, landmarks they pass [primarily the Panama Canal], sketching, descriptions of other ships, books Catharine and Edith are reading, disembarking in Bremen Germany and heading to Zurich Switzerland by car, local architecture and geography, going to Klosters for a week to ski, descriptions of accomodations, and moving higher into the mountains to to Davos-Laret to watch an international ski race, ski, and paint. Also includes a telegram.

Notes: Please note: language pertaining to Indigenous Peoplesand people of the Jewish faith used throughout is outdated and may be offensive. Most letters are written on hotel/lodge letterhead. Some letters are marked with a small x in pencil, indicating where Jon Whyte made notes for use in his project "Catharine Robb Whyte, Peter Whyte: Commemorative Portfolio," originally published in 1981. 103 - 12 is addressed to Russ and contains Pete and Catharine's contact details for their trip to Europe and financial information. 103 - 16 contains two pages cut from a brochure advertising the SS Vancouver, Catharine has made notations on one page. 103 - 21 insert is a blue ribbon with yellow stitched letters reading "Hapag - D. << Vancouver >>" - ribbon is ca. 95.8 x 3.2 cm. 103 - 24 contains an insert for page 14 of a sketch of the Panama Canal locks. 103 - 29 contains a sketch and description of a T-bar ski lift system.
