History / Biographical: Raphel (Ray) Bagley, 1880-1973, was a rancher and guide in the Red Deer, Onion Lake and Coleman districts of Alberta, Canada. Bagley came to the Lacombe district of Alberta in 1892. He homesteaded and ranched while guiding with the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies and conducting private trail rides throughout the southern Rockies from Waterton Lakes National Park to Banff National Park. Bagley wrote poems on western and trail riding themes, self-publishing a volume titled "Those Other Days" in 1969.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of poems in manuscript and published form, n.d., 1969; other textual material, n.d., 1926; photographs pertaining to the Bagley family, undated; and a sound recording of Bagley reading poems, ca.1970. Included are components for book "Those Other Days"; calendar from Ike and Alma Mills, 1926; letterhead from Crowsnest Ranch, Coleman, Alberta, n.d.; and scrapbook, 1918-1925, pertaining to the winter sports career of Bagley's niece Syd Brewster (Graves), including Banff Winter Carnival, competitive skating and employment at the Chateau Frontenac as winter sports instructor. Recorded poems are "The Bulgy Squaw", "Sweet Annabelle" and "Muskeg Joe."

History / Biographical: Ruth Oltmann, b.1937, has been a youth hostel operator, lodge and camp cook, tourism industry worker, and writer in the Kananaskis, Canmore and Exshaw, Alberta, Canada areas since 1970. Her writing career began in 1974, when she contributed to a chapter on environmental history as part of "The Mountain Environment and Urban Society, Kananaskis Pilot Study," a project of the University of Calgary's Environmental Sciences Centre at Kananaskis, Alberta. Oltmann continued her research and writing, publishing "The valley of rumours: the Kananaskis" (Seebe, Alberta: Ribbon Creek Publishing, 1979) and "Lizzie Rummel: Baroness of the Canadian Rockies" (Seebe, Alberta: Ribbon Creek Publishing, 1983).

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of research files on Lizzie Rummel (textual) and research interviews by Ruth Oltmann, as part of her research on the Kananaskis Valley; with: Eileen Langille, Chris Bearns, Joanne Goodwin, Gordon and Ida Matthews, Clarence and Jenny Sage, Jack S. Charlesworth, Art Krowchuk, Bruno Engler, Cord Tietzen. Pertain to human history of the Kananaskis Valley, including mining, lumber industry, hunting and guiding, power and road development, recreation, film making, and community life; Ribbon Creek village, personalities, events, buildings, etc.; Kananaskis Ranger Station; Kananaskis prisoner-of-war camp; natural history of the region, including wildlife, forests and fishing resources.

History / Biographical: Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies is a charitable, non-profit organization based in Banff, Alberta, Canada. In 1958, the Wa-Che-Yo-Cha-Pa Foundation, presently the Peter and Catharine Whyte Foundation which operates the Whyte Museum, was founded and endowed by artists Peter and Catharine Whyte. The foundation acts as an agency for collecting and preserving cultural materials of the Canadian Rockies. In 1968, the foundation's building opened at 111 Bear Street, providing accommodation for a regional archives, gallery and public library. Between 1967 and 1983, the Archives department recorded and summarized interviews with local personalities, as well as recording noteworthy meetings and events.

Scope & Content: Fonds includes recordings of interviews, events, broadcasts, meetings, notes, readings and slide shows produced by and for the Archives of the Whyte Museum.; I.
