- The photographic firm of Boorne and May, a portrait, landscape and architectural business, operated in Calgary and Edmonton, N.W.T. (now Alberta) between 1886 and 1893. William Hanson Boorne, 1859-1945, and his cousin, Ernest Gundry May, opened their Calgary studio in 1886, later expanding the business to Edmonton. During its short life, Boorne and May was one of the most prestigious photographic firms in western Canada.
- Scope & Content
- Fonds consist of two separate series: A. Prints; B. Photograph Albums. Fonds consists primarily of presentation album titled "Landscapes," containing one hundred views along the Canadian Pacific Railway in the Rocky and Selkirk Mountains. The album contains many popular views of the period and is inscribed to "W. Whyte Esq., General Superintendent, Western Division C.P.R., Winnipeg. With Boorne & May's Compliments. Calgary. January 1889." Also includes individual prints of similar views to those in the album and include views as far west as Yale, B.C.
- Twenty-two prints, attributable to Boorne and May through photographer numbers and titles on the fronts, are stamped "From J. Nicholson, Photo Artist, Boissevain, Man." on the reverse. Nicholson was a professional photographer at Boissevain, Manitoba between 1888 and 1893. His business was sold to Jas. E. Miers in 1893.

- Gertrude (Dot) White of Banff and Calgary, Alberta, Canada was the daughter of Daniel Cook White, 1862-1909, of Cochrane, Alberta. Her uncle was David McIntosh White, 1864-1940, of Banff. Dot White's married names were Lyman and Elliot.

- Kay Powell (nee Kathleen Burt-Smith) attended the private Mountain School in Banff, Alberta which was founded by Margaret and Henry Greenham in 1920. She was sent to the nearest private boarding school as a result of a fear of bombing in her home town of Victoria, BC by the Japanese during World War II. Kay Powell started half-way through her grade 9 year in 1940 and stayed until 1944. She won a school prize in 1943 for "friendliness" and returned to Victoria, B.C. after the war where she married James Michael Powell and had two children and three grandchildren. She was an avid boater and passed away in 2017.

- Fonds consists of two sous-fonds: M199 (textual) and V158 (photographs). M199 consists of two series, 1.1 cm, 1940-1942. Series I : Miscellaneous textual materials, 0.1 cm, 1940-1942 (includes envelope and letterhead from Sunshine Lodge, 1944 and an envelope and letterhead from Kananaskis Ranch, Seebe, Alberta featuring sketches of C.A. Beil; 1 card with signatures; newspaper clipping pertaining to mountain school students skiing at Sunshine). Series II : Mountain Echoes, 1 cm, 1941-1943 (includes 2 school journals "Mountain Echoes," 1941-1942 and 1942-1943 pertaining to school events) V158 consists of two series, 2.9 cm, 1940-1942. Series I : Photograph albums, 2 cm, 1940-1942 (1 photograph album with 43 photographs pertaining to Kay Powell's time at the Mountain School, including textual records within of valedictory poem and lyrics to a school song "Forty Years On" on Havergal College letterhead. Series II : Photograph prints, 0.9 cm, 11 x 19.5 cm or smaller and related textual record 5 pages ; 42.5 x 28 cm or smaller, 1940-1942 (includes 4 photograph prints pertaining to school teachers who taught at the Mountain School, with associated information and newspaper clipping).

- History / Biographical
- Margaret Elizabeth (Haskins) Greenham, 1881-1960, and Henry Warren Greenham, 1870-1953, were educators at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Margaret Haskins was born in England and was educated there and in Paris, France. She moved to Toronto, Ontario in 1908, teaching at Havergal Ladies College. She met English-born Henry Greenham in Banff; they married and taught at Pine Lake, Alberta before returning to Banff in 1919. From 1920 until 1947, the Greenhams operated a private school known as the Mountain School. They were leading organizers of cultural activities in Banff. Margaret Greenham was instrumental in the Banff Literary-Dramatic Society, the Merry-Go-Round Theatre for children and Banff Home Industries, a local crafts society.
