A set of eight lathe turned dolls, graduated in size and hollow so that one fits inside the other, with the largest doll most ornately decorated and holding all the others. (a) 15.0 x 6.7 odia. slightly rounded cylinder shape narrowing to tall domed head. Brightly painted to represent white bearded Eastern Orthodox priest with robes of blue and red trimmed and patterned with gold, tall domed hat on head with chisel mark texture, features and details of robes defined with incised lines. Marks: on base, "Made in Russia", "A3 g", "1.75" (b) 9.0 x 3.9 odia more simply decorated, unbearded figure wearing plain orange and yellow robes and blue hood with gold mitre on head, gold placket from chin to foot with white dots. Marks: on base, "g" (c) 6.3 x 2.9 odia, simply decorated, unbearded figure wearing orange robe with blue panel decorated with gold at front, black hat with gold band across forehead and gold vertical stripe above, yellow ear like shapes at each side of face. Marks: on base, "g" Note: base cracked in half vertically and glued back together. (d) 4.8 x 2.0 odia, simply decorated, unbearded figure, with orange and yellow robes, and blue hood, gold mitre on head and narrow gold panel down front of robes, similar to (b) Marks: on base, "g" (e) 3.3 x 1.4 odia, similar to (c) with blue robes and yellow panel down front, orange ear like shapes. Marks: on base, "g" (f) 2.1 x 1.0odia, very simple figure with orange robes and hood, gold mitre on head and gold panel down front of robes. Marks: on base, "g" Similar to (d). (g) 1.4 x .7 odia, tiny, completely undecorated, yellow dyed piece the same shape as the rest, hollow. (h) .8 x .5 odia, tiny, solid piece of same shape, dyed orange.

Description
A set of eight egg shaped dolls graduated in size so that each fits within the next. Two halves of each doll join at the waist by placing top over small wooden lip. (a) brightly coloured peasant woman wearing flowered red kerchief and apron over blue skirt and yellow blouse, round face with brown hair, black eyes and red heart shaped lips painted on. (b) 8.5 h x 4.7 d, not so detailed, brightly coloured plain yellow kerchief with red dress, similar face. (c) 6.3 x 3.8, as (b) with pink kerchief and green dress. (d) 4.8 x 2.9 as (b) with yellow kerchief and blue dress. (e) 3.5 x 2.1 clothed in pink kerchief and robe of one piece. (f) 2.5 x 1.6 as (e) but yellow. (g) 1.8 x 1.1 no features at all, same shape as others but simply dyed a green-yellow. (h) .9 x .8-as (g) but dyed yellow, opens but is empty.
