History / Biographical
The Alpine Club of Canada, the national mountaineering club, was co-founded in 1906 by A. O. Wheeler and Elizabeth Parker, and other like-minded climbers. The club espoused scientific study and exploration, cultivation of art, public education, acquisition of climbing skills, and preservation of natural areas within the mountainous regions of Canada. Through a national executive, local sections and volunteer committees, the club provided climbing camps, clubhouse, huts, and publications, including the Canadian Alpine Journal. ACC expeditions and projects resulted in pioneer exploration, first ascents, and included mountain warfare training during the Second World War. In recent years, the club's membership has increased dramatically with the popularity of climbing and its programs have evolved to serve the needs of unguided climbers using sophisticated technical aids.
Scope & Content
Fonds constitutes the principal resource for the study of the history of Canadian mountaineering. It provides a wealth of information on individual alpinists, expeditions, mountains, national parks, conservation, climbing, alpine organizations, publications, guiding, scientific study and the Alpine Club itself.
The fonds consists of four Sous-fonds: I. Alpine Club of Canada records; II. Mount Everest Expedition (1982) records; III. Personal papers and photographs; IV. Other material. Club administration records (series I.A.) pertain to executive positions; head office; finance; camps, climbing and treks; expeditions; huts and properties; clubhouses; library; publications; photography; other committees; other activities; and other. Other club records include section records (series I.B.), hut registers and summit records (series I.C.).

The Banff Ski Runners of the Canadian Rockies was established in 1931 as the Ski Runners of the Canadian Rockies with the support of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The club promoted alpine and nordic skiing for pleasure and sport through competitions, training and facilities. The Talewag was the official bulletin of the Ski Runners of the Canadian Rockies which published articles and images related to skiing in the Canadian Rockies. More recently, the organization has emphasized cross-country activities.

Banff Winter Carnival, also known as Winter Sports of the Canadian Rockies, was the first post-war winter sports programme held in Banff, Alberta. The organization had Banff directors, Calgary directors and Directors-at-large from Alberta and outside the province. A wide variety of social and sports events took place under the organization's direction.

Banff Winter Carnival photographs, 1950s, are mainly publicity photographs and order proofs by British Photographic Laboratories (Bill Gibbons); some by Alpine Films. Content includes Carnival Queen contests, parades, activities, including masquerade ball, other.
Textual records of the Winter Sports of the Canadian Rockies organization, 1945-1946, include minutes, reports, letters, news reports, press clippings, pamphlets, programmes, posters and leaflets. These records are in the form of a scrapbook and loose items. Many items pertain to involvement of Ethel "Tillie" Knight.

Banff Winter Festival, successor to Banff Winter Carnival, was coordinated under the Chamber of Commerce until 1986. After that time it operated in association with the Recreation and Culture Department of what is now the Town of Banff. The Banff Winter Festival Society was founded in 1988 and has operated in conjunction with the Banff-Lake Louise Tourism Bureau since 1994.

History / Biographical
Clinton Bruce Hatfield (1926-2009) was born in Calgary, Alberta. After graduating from Western Canada High School in 1945, Bruce attended the University of Alberta, where he completed a Bachelor of Science degree in 1948, a Master of Science degree in 1951, and a Medical Degree in 1953. Bruce interned at the University of Alberta Hospital before moving to Minneapolis in 1957, where he worked as an Instructor in Medicine at the University of Minnesota Hospital (1958-1959). Bruce moved back to Calgary and opened a private medical practice with his brother, Bob Hatfield. While operating his private practice, Bruce also served on several committees at the Calgary Hospital, including the Intern Committee, Library Committee, Medical Education Committee, Pharmacy Committee (of which he was Chair in 1966), and the Department of Medicine Committee. Bruce was hired as an Assistant Professor at the University of Calgary in 1970, and was Clinical Professor of Medicine when he retired in 1994. Bruce was active as an educator and volunteer in his community, and supported numerous charitable initiatives through the United Church of Canada. He gave public presentations on the topics of Family Life and Sex Education throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Bruce also served as a Trail Doctor for the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies on numerous trips between 1963 and 1995. Bruce was also a talented photographer; his photographs were featured in multiple publications including Macleans magazine, Canadian Doctor, and Canadian Medical Association Journal. Bruce was the recipient of many awards including Calgary’s Citizen of the Year (1970), the Premier’s Cup (1983), an Honorary Doctorate of Laws from the University of Calgary (1995) and most recently was chosen as one of Alberta’s 100 Physicians of the Century (2005). Bruce and his brother, Bob, were co-recipients of the Alberta Achievement Award and the Premier's Cup for Excellence in Medicine and the Community. Bruce was married to his wife, Kathleen, for 55 years and the couple raised four daughters together: Linda, Barbara, Sue and Kate.

The Calgary Mountain Club (CMC) is Calgary's oldest mountaineering organization that is dedicated specifically to the furtherance of hard climbing objectives on significant peaks. These peaks are predominantly in the Canadian Rockies, but in many cases extend to significant mountain ranges throughout North America and Europe. The CMC was founded in 1960 and is still an active club as of 2023. Chic Scott's publication, "History of the Calgary Mountain Club" (1988) provides a detailed summary of the club's early history.

The Girl Guides began Canadian operations in 1910 in St. Catharines, Ontario following the movement's foundation in England by Lord Baden-Powell in 1909. In 1912 Canadian headquarters were established in Toronto and in 1917 a Canadian Council was incorporated. In 1961 the organization became known as Girl Guides of Canada with a goal to teach and train girls responsibility and community service. Girls enroll in various Brownie, Guide or Ranger Packs under the supervision of volunteer Pack leaders. The girls earn badges in a wide variety of activities. The Guide movement in Alberta began in 1912 with Companies forming first in Edmonton and then around the province. A Guide Group of 9-15 girls was established in Banff in the mid-1920s followed by the creation of a Brownie Pack in 1939. In 1961 the Banff Scout-Guide Hall opened in Banff.

History / Biographical
John Monod, 1913-2002, skier, adventurer and mountaineer, was born in Geneva, Switzerland. Before moving to Canada, John Monod was a world class skier and racer in Europe. He worked in a ski shop in Megeve, France selling skis and providing private ski lessons. Well known for their skills, experience and knowledge, John Monod and friend Fred Iselin were hired by the mayor of Chamonix, France to develop lift service skiing. While in Chamonix, John and Fred also operated a shop selling skis and clothing. In 1947, John Monod immigrated to Canada. Arriving in Banff, Alberta, he was met by fellow Swiss, Bruno Engler. John became a ski instructor at Mount Norquay and worked for Elizabeth Rummel at Skoki Lodge as aide-de-camp, hauling food supplies into the area. In 1949 he established Monod Sports at Sunshine Lodge (Sunshine Village) providing ski tours during the day and working from his store in the evening. Ca.1953, in partnership with local businessman Mel Medic, Monod established Monod and Medic in Banff. The business was open year round and sold sportswear, mountaineering equipment and fishing gear in addition to ski equipment and clothing. Within a year, Monod bought out Mel Medic's shares in the business and by 1963, Monod's Banff location required more space. Monod rented store space in Harmony Lane on Banff Avenue and Monod Sports remained in this location until 2001 when they relocated to their present location at 129 Banff Ave. In 1956, a fire destroyed the Sunshine Lodge store. Monod soon re-established the Sunshine Lodge location and operated it until ca.1960. In the 1960s, John Monod established a sportswear boutique at the Banff Springs Hotel, which was managed by his wife Kay. He also opened a ski shop and rental store at the Banff Springs Hotel and established the Banff Springs Hotel Ski School which ran from 1969 to 1972. In 1969, Monod opened a retail store at Chateau Lake Louise. Monod and his wife Kay have three sons, Phillip (b.1957), Peter (b.1958), and Nick (b.1961) and a daughter (Stephanie Townsend), who were all very involved in ski racing.
In the early 1960s Monod, along with other entrepreneurs and Banff business owners, worked to bring the Olympics to Banff. While unsuccessful in their Olympic bid, Monod continued his efforts to bring racing competitions to Banff and played an important role in the decision to hold the 1972 World Cup at Norquay. Monod was also active in the Banff Ski Runners for many years.

Jon Whelan (1952-2022) was a researcher, historian, and collector based in Banff, Alberta. Jon had a special interest in topics related to Banff National Park and Canadian Pacific Railway Company. Jon conducted independent research, as well as research for various authors and historians, from the 1980s onwards. Jon was also an active participant in municipal politics in Banff. "For most of Jon’s life, he was engaged in community affairs and fearless in voicing an opinion. He was successful in raising public awareness and his tenacity achieved a personal goal, which was to initiate the use of video for regular Town of Banff council meetings. The Lake O'Hara Trails Club was established 1948, dissolved in 1962 and reactivated in 1969 to create, improve and maintain a system of trails in the Lake O'Hara region of Yoho National Park, British Columbia. Later work involved providing information on the region to visitors, publishing maps and historical works, and continuing the efforts of founders, George K. K. Link and A. Carson Simpson.

Larry Emrick, journalist with the Vancouver Sun newspaper, Vancouver, B.C., was seconded to Southam News to cover the 1982 Mount Everest Expedition and to assist Bruce Patterson of the Calgary Herald, who was at the Everest Base Camp throughout the climb. Emrick and Patterson sent daily dispatches to Ottawa for inclusion in the Southam chain newspapers.

The Loyal Orange Lodge was a patriotic, benevolent, Protestant fraternal association. The Banff Lodge was probably established in 1912, the earliest year of membership cited in the records. Members included tradesmen, merchants, clerks and government workers from Banff and until the 1920s, coal miners from Bankhead.

History / Biographical
The Norman Luxton family was a prominent family in Banff, Alberta, Canada from 1904 until 1962. Daughter Eleanor Luxton maintained the family's position in the town until her death in 1995.
Publisher and businessman Norman K. Luxton, 1876-1962, was the son of Winnipeg Free Press co-founder William Luxton. After working for the Winnipeg Free Press, Norman Luxton travelled, then joined the Calgary Herald for eight years. In 1901, he journeyed 10,000 miles on the Pacific in the dug-out canoe Tilikum. After becoming ill, Luxton abandoned the trip in Fiji and came to Banff to recuperate. The around-the-world trip was subsequently completed by his sailing partner, Capt. John Voss.
Luxton bought Banff's Crag and Canyon newspaper in 1902 and remained as publisher until 1951. Also in 1902, he established the Sign of the Goat Curio store which specialized in Stoney Indian handicrafts and taxidermy specimens. Other significant Luxton businesses were the King Edward Hotel and Livery, Luxton Bros. insurance (with brother Louis Luxton) and the Lux Block, which included a hotel, the Lux Theatre and retail stores.
In 1904, Norman Luxton married Georgina (Georgie) Elizabeth McDougall, 1870-1965, of the pioneer missionary McDougall family of Morley, Alberta. In addition to her McDougall connections, Georgie Luxton was related by marriage to Senator George Ross. Norman and Georgie Luxton had one child, Eleanor Georgina, born in Banff in 1908.
The Luxtons were important Banff "boosters" with involvement in numerous local organizations and events. Norman Luxton managed the Banff Indian Days from 1909 to 1950, was a founder of Banff Winter Carnival and was involved with native events at the Calgary Stampede for 25 years. In 1953, Norman established a museum to house his native artifacts. The Luxton Museum was built in co-operation with Eric Harvie of the Glenbow Foundation of Calgary. After Luxton's death, the museum continued to be managed by the Glenbow until 1992.
Eleanor Luxton, 1908-1995, was a writer, historian, researcher, engineer, teacher and business woman. After graduating from high school in Banff in 1926, she attended the University of Alberta from 1926 until 1939, receiving degrees in history (BA '30, MA'33), a Diploma in Education (1931) and subsequent education, biology and natural history courses during the summers.
Between 1937 and 1956, Eleanor received further degrees and certificates from studies at Garbutt Business College (Calgary), St. Stephen's College (Edmonton), Ottawa Technical High School, Havergal Ladies College (Ontario), St. George Williams College (Montreal), McGill University (Montreal) and the Banff School of Fine Arts. Subjects studied included office practices, shorthand, machine draughting, English, civil engineering (BSc '46), German, broadcast writing, management, commerce, accounting and commercial law.
Eleanor Luxton's extensive education overlapped and preceded a long and varied professional career. Her teaching career extended from high school teacher in Alberta (Banff and Sexsmith), 1933-1940, to university lecturer in Montreal in the 1950s. During the 1940s, she worked in locomotive design for the CPR in Montreal. Beginning in 1956 and continuing until 1965, when she returned to Banff to care for her mother, Eleanor worked throughout southern Alberta as a field researcher for Calgary's Glenbow Foundation. From 1965 until her death in 1995, Eleanor remained in Banff in her family home and pursued an active career in writing and research.

History / Biographical
Margaret Ruth Oliver was born on December 19, 1927 to parents Edgar and Gladys (Brazier) Hammett in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Margaret's siblings include Dorothy (1922), Muriel "Miv" (1923), John (1929), and Jean (1933). Margaret graduated from United College (Winnipeg) in 1949 with a B.Sc. degree, and worked as an Assistant Librarian at the University of Manitoba afterwards. Margaret later enrolled in a Laboratory Technician program at the University of Manitoba Medical College. Margaret married Thomas Albert Oliver, a fellow University of Manitoba alumnus, on September 25, 1954. The couple moved to Calgary for work (Thomas taught at the University of Calgary, and Margaret worked for a geophysical company). Margaret travelled extensively following the death of her husband in 1997, visiting places such as Nepal, Cambodia, Russia, Egypt and Greenland. In 1971, Margaret formed a hiking group within the University Faculty Women's Club (F.W.C.) through the University of Calgary. In 1976, this group became a private club called the Tuesday Hikers, which no longer held any affiliation to the F.W.C. Trips included weekly hikes and/or ski trips, as well as longer backpacking excursions.The club is still active as of 2022.
