History / Biographical: Elizabeth (Lizzie) Rummel, 1897-1980, was a lodge owner and operator at Banff National Park, Alberta and Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park, British Columbia, Canada. Rummel was born Elisabeth von Rummel to an aristocratic German family. With her mother and sisters, she ranched near Millarville, Alberta, after being stranded there during the First World War. In 1938, Lizzie moved to the mountains and became involved in early ski and backcountry operations. Her forty-two year career in the mountains included: working at Mount Assiniboine Lodge until 1942; managing Skoki Lodge and, at various times, Temple Chalet and Lake Louise Ski Lodge, ca.1943-1950; owning and operating Sunburst Lake Camp, 1950-1970; and working as assistant and oral history interviewer at the Archives of the Canadian Rockies (now the Archives of the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies) from 1966 to 1980. Lizzie was active in the town affairs of Canmore, Alberta, where she lived, as well as in various conservation and recreation organizations. She became a member of the Order of Canada in 1980.

History / Biographical: J. D. McDonald was a member of the Rossland Historical Museum Association of Rossland, B.C., who researched the Canadian Pacific Railway.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of extensive interview with Norman H. Brewster, pioneer of ski mountaineering in the Selkirk and Rocky Mountains. Brewster came to Field, British Columbia in 1929, and thereafter was a Canadian Pacific Railway employee at Field and Glacier, B.C. for many years. Accounts of his ski mountaineering trips and expeditions, most with mountaineer A. A. McCoubrey, appear in the Canadian Alpine Journal. Brewster was a member of the Alpine Club of Canada, 1939-1953. Interviews pertain to expeditions, trips and ski camps in the Rockies and Selkirks, including: the Battle Range, 1946-1947; Swiss Guides Lily Col ski trip; first Alpine Ski Camp at Lake O'Hara; numerous ski trips, including Mount Uto, Mount Terminal, Asulkan Valley, Mount Sir Donald; Yoho ski mountaineering and ski camps; Little Yoho Ski Camp; Yoho Glacier; Freshfield Snowfield. History / Biographical: Sydney R. Vallance, 1891-1979, was a lawyer and mountaineer at Calgary and Banff, Alberta, Canada. Vallance began his law career in 1920, establishing a private practice in 1929. He joined the Alpine Club of Canada in 1932 and held executive positions at both the section and national levels, including a term as President from 1947 to 1950. He made over one hundred ascents during his climbing career. Vallance was also a member of the Skyline Trail Hikers of the Canadian Rockies and was an avid amateur photographer

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of personal papers, photographs and sound recordings of Sydney Vallance pertaining mainly to the Canadian Rockies and Vallance's mountaineering career.; Textual records include manuscripts pertaining to personalities of the Canadian Rockies and to slide presentations on the Banff, Lake Louise, Lake O'Hara and Jasper regions; correspondence files arising from Vallance's positions as Vice President and Hut Committee Chairman of the Alpine Club of Canada, 1945-1946, and as member and President of the Lake O'Hara Trails Club, 1958-1962; miscellaneous correspondence on mountaineering, glacier study, expeditions, packers and outfitters, naming of five peaks in the Mt. Lyell massive after Swiss guides, 1920-1972. Correspondents include Sydney Baker, Eric Brooks, F. V. Longstaff, J. Monroe Thorington and Don Munday. Includes holograph map of the Great Divide region.; Photographs are mainly landscape views of the Rocky Mountains by Sydney Vallance.
