High-altitude inhabitants - the mountain summits we strive for are, at first glance, barren. Yet high-altitude species of the Rockies call these steep slopes "home". We tapped into the knowledge of naturalist Ben Gadd to spotlight six alpine dwellers that thrive where it seems nothing could survive

- Abstract
- In 1916 Conrad Kain cemented his reputation as one of the greatest mountaineers of his era by reaching the summit of Bugaboo Spire in BC's Purcell Mountains, considered one of the most difficult climbs at the time. One hundred years later, four Canadian mountaineers set out to re-enact Kain's extraordinary feat, climbing the 3,204m Bugaboo Spire with the same equipment that was used in 1916 - and bringing to life one of the great outdoor adventures of the Canadian frontier. The film "Hobnails and Hemp Rope" tells their story (from DVD)

- Abstract
- Written by one of the most respected experts in water and water-associated climate science and featuring stunning photography collected over the past four decades, Our Vanishing Glaciers explains and illustrates why water is such a unique substance and how it makes life on this planet possible. Focusing on the Columbia Icefield, the largest and most accessible mass of ice straddling the Continental Divide in western North America, and featuring photographs, illustrations, aerial surveys and thermal imaging collected over more than 40 years of the author’s personal observations, the book reveals the stunning magnitude of glacial ice in western Canada. Citing evidence to suggest that in the Canadian Rocky Mountain national parks alone, as many as 300 glaciers may have disappeared since 1920, this large-format, fully illustrated coffee table book graphically illustrates the projected rate of glacier recession in the mountain West over the rest of this century and serves as a profound testament to the beauty and importance of western Canada’s water, ice and snow. (from publisher's website)

- Abstract
- Ride the rails through Canada’s western mountains to explore the many vestiges of the region’s spectacular and surprising railway heritage. Here is where grand railway hotels were built to attract tourists to the West’s beautiful scenery and bring profit to the railway lines as well. Rustic stations added to the allure. The challenges of conquering the mountains resulted in some of Canada’s most ingenious feats of engineering, such as spiral tunnels and soaring trestles (one of which was featured in The Amazing Race Canada). Relive the days of rail on a steam train, the luxurious Rocky Mountaineer, or one of VIA Rail’s mountain journeys. Outdoor enthusiasts can follow the abandoned roadbeds of Canada’s more spectacular rail trails, like the legendary Kettle Valley Railway. Also included are some of Canada’s most extensive railway museums, which have helped to bring this vanished era back to life. (From publisher's website)
