History / Biographical
Christian and Hans Kaufmann were Swiss mountaineering guides in Switzerland and Canada. The brothers guided prominent mountaineers, such as James Outram and J. Norman Collie, for several years in the Canadian Rockies and were involved in numerous first ascents.
Scope & Content
Fonds consists of fuhrer-buches (guide-books) for Hans Kaufmann, 1895-1929, and Christian Kaufmann, 1892-1938, as well as photographs. Guide-books contain certifications as Swiss Guides and testimonials from clients in Switzerland (until 1901 and 1902, and after 1905) and in Canada at Banff, Lake Louise and Field (from 1901 and 1902 to 1904). Photographs were collected by the Kaufmann brothers and pertain to Christian and Hans Kaufmann, associates and clients, climbs, scenic views, ca.1905, 1931.
