History / Biographical
Martin Nordegg, 1868-1948, was an investment syndicate representative and manager at Nordegg, Alberta and Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. Nordegg became highly successful as a coal mining developer between 1906, the year of his arrival in Canada, and 1914. Nordegg travelled in the circles of high finance and politics in Canada, England and Germany prior to the First World War, but moved to the United States during the war to avoid harassment due to his German nationality. He divested himself of his western Canadian interests upon his return. While exploring and developing coal fields on the Eastern slopes of the Rockies, Nordegg frequently made Banff his base of operations and employed trail guides of Banff and Morley, Alberta.
