Abstract
"Seventy-one [of Warre's sketches] are reproduced in the present volume. Those omitted are unfinished or unidentified sketches, or pictures whose subjects are extraneous to the general theme. Pictures made in Canada before the start of Warre's overland journey have been placed at the beginning. The remainder follow, as nearly as possible, in the order of his journey out to the Pacific, his wanderings in the Orgeon country, and the return trip to Montreal. Artistically, the pictures speak for themselves. But quite aside from their freshness and charm, they are important historical documents. Warre's sketchbook is one of the few existing pictorial records of the Pacific Northwest in the decade of the 1840's. The captions are for the most part his own titles, and his spelling of place names has been retained." -- Introduction.
