Description

Ties would tie immediately behind neck. A brass necklace with pony beads in a traditional men’s design. Marks; the cardboard has been cracked through the vertical middle.“Collings spent the first 40 years of his life in South Devon, only a few miles from the coast. Harbour views, often with boats, dominate his early work. Bright green bonnet (calash) with eight folds. Fabric is stitched around shaped metal stays, 14 in all. Neck piece is padded and shaped with wire. Rim has fabric folded or pleated in ribbon effect. Long green ribbon ties at front of neck. Additional long grey ribbon attached to brim higher on face. Inside back is reinforced with burlap on which is glued brown paper. Written in Mary Schaffer’s hand: “18 S.M. Potts 1832 Calasche”. On back, ribbon is tied in bow. Green fabric stitched on back to cover neck.

Description
Small square wooden box with inlaid top. Box contains another box within concealed by separate removable side panels on all four sides. Inlay pattern is a series of horizontal strips of dark, light and black woods. The horizontals are interrupted by two rectangles. Upper triangle, 6.4 x 2.5 cm. is inlaid with thin strips of black set diagonally in both directions. The lower triangle, 3.5 x 3.0 cm, is inlaid with twelve light and black wood triangles. A narrow vertical rectangle, 3.2 x .9 cm. of light wood interrupted by thin horizontal strips of black is set to the left of the lower triangle. The four corner support posts are attached to base by small wooden pegs which are visible on bottom.
