History / Biographical: David Mowbray Soole (1885-1959) was postmaster at Bankhead until 1913 when he moved to Banff to establish a real estate and insurance business. He sold the business in 1919 and bought the Homestead Hotel in Banff which he operated until 1945. Eric and his wife, Violet, had two children: a daughter, Ivy (Bond), and a son, Eric A. Soole. Eric Astley Soole (1918-2012) grew up in Banff and Calgary. He married Sylvia (Maberley) Soole (1924-2016) in 1942 or 1943. Eric served in the Royal Canadian Air Force

History / Biographical: William "Bill" Royle (1905-1980) moved to Banff from Lethbridge in 1952 with his mother (Mary Elizabeth) and two young sons (Bernard and Walter), following the death of his wife. William started the business Banff Plumbing and Heating Ltd., which he operated until his death. William and his brother, John J. Royle, were also involved with a laundromat business in Banff. From its inception in 1953, William also worked as director and president of the Banff Park Savings and Credit Union (now Bow Valley Credit Union). In his spare time, William volunteered with the Banff Boy Scouts, as well as St. Mary's Church in Banff, the Seniors' Society and the Alberta Council of the Aging. William's son, Bernard, tragically passed away in a plane crash in 1969 while searching for new heliskiing routes in British Columbia with his friend, John Gow, who survived.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of photographs, published booklets and film reels which belonged to William Royle. Hall [extreme] right. centre L to R Carpe, MacCarthy Foster ; These pictures taken towards the south over a sea of clouds obscuring the Seward and Malaspina glaciers and all the surrounding peaks leaving the top of St. Elias alone sticking up. The peak of King Mt. not more than 5 miles distant all showing, the sea of clouds showing beyond. Note the South butress of King and long ridge leading from teh peak to the right being the south wall of the King Glacier. King Col, is just below the ridge facing the picture and decending from the summit in a jagged arete ; This the only photograph I have of "Windy Camp" (16800) taken looking northward up the ice slopes followed on the ascent. Left the S.W. spur of the Logan massif ; Plateau Camp at an elevation of 17500 ft approximately, is the camp from which Mt. Logan was climbed on the 23 of June. These pictures were taken on a clear morning and it is hard to explain the failure in the results obtained. The panorama shows the upper glacier plateau below the high summits of the massif. The photograph sweeps the northern horizon through about a half circle. Distant rangers shown are those of the walsh Glacier and west end of the glacier and mountain system between the base of Logan and Kluane Lake, 60 miles eastward.

Here the ice became so bad that the two sleds were left behind, cached a further amount of equipment, including stove and robe etc. & shouldered our loads for the remaining 30 miles into Hubricks Camp ; Portraits of all but Carpe, how he came to be missed unknown. Taken the day after we got into Hubricks before the grand shave & clean up. 1 MacCarthy 2 Foster 1 Andy Taylor 3 H.F.L 1 Read 1 H.M. Laing ; The making of two boats on arrival at Hubrick's camp on the 6th of July having originally been decided upon, now abandoned on acount of the condition of the party and the length of time to build (10 days) rafts in lieu of the boats finally decided upon. Two of these commenced July 8 and completed the 10th. and the journey started down the Chitina River at 1.30 P.M. July 11th. with desastrous results to one (MacCarthur, Foster, Carpe) and reaching Rush Pond with the other (Taylor, Lambart, Read) 12.30 midnight July 12, 60 miles by stream.

July 13 ; The first negative of close up in camp by H.F.L. other by Taylor of first relays to the top of the Quartz Ridge, 1000 feet above the Cascade camp site ; The process by which, with a 700 foot alpine line we were able to get one of the hand sleds to the summit of the quartz ridge from the Cascades camp below ; Cache and group at the top of the quartz ridge. This point being about 1000 feet above Cascades ; This is a photograph looking straight down the Ogilvie glacier from a point 1000 feet above its head. Its confluence with the Logan is distinctly seen ; A mere spot in a world of ice, cascades camp as viewed from above from the summit of the Quartz Ridge. This photograph shows well the base of the cascades and the character of the glaciers entering the head of the Ogilvie Gl. ; From a rock ridge where Morgan hand enticed me one afternoon we got this of the top of St. Elias appearing through the clouds. Topics include: Going into our first camp on the bars of the Chitina River being a half days run from "Rush Pound," where we stopped and had lunch on the way in ; Packing up at Brysons, being the old camp ground of the Surveys (Barny Bryson) and from which point a trail leads out of the valley of the Chitina (rising 3000 ft) and leading to the head of the Young Creek. MacCarthy took this trail coming in coming out last summer after the reconnaissance. This is the 4th. camp out from McCarthy the next 16 miles to Short River ; Short river Camp, 5th camp out from McCarthy and only 7 miles out from Hubricks. Mountain in back on other side of Chitina Valley. Crossed Clear Water, Canon and Short river before reaching this camp ; Eastward up the valley of the Chitina Valley Tree islands and the morain covered toe of the Chitina Glacier showing. Hubricks Camp near point shown on left, just showing ; The Chitina Valley below Hubrick's Camp distant horizon being the toe of the Chitina Glacier. Mt. History / Biographical: The Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies is a trail riding organization based in Calgary, Alberta. The organization was established in 1923 with the support of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The first ride was held in 1924, and annual summer trail rides and pow-wows attracted fifteen hundred members by 1929. Many notable residents of the Bow Valley, including members of the Brewster and Moore families, Catherine Robb and Peter Whyte, and Carl Rungius have participated in trail rides. Support from the Canadian Pacific Railway ended in 1961. As of 2020, the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies remains an active organization. History / Biographical: Belmore Browne, d.1954, was a well-known artist who lived and worked at Banff and Seebe, Alberta, Canada and in the United States. Browne and Agnes Evelyn Sibley, 1882-1976, were married in 1913. In 1921, they bought property in Banff for a summer home and with their children, George, 1918-1958, and Evelyn, 1915-1994, travelled extensively throughout the 1920s and 1930s in pursuit of subjects for Belmore Browne's paintings. In 1946, the Brownes built a home near Seebe. Agnes Browne was a diarist for the family and much of her extensive writing centres around the career of Belmore Browne. Her daughter Evelyn consolidated the diaries in the 1980s. George Browne was also an artist.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists mainly of diary excerpts and transcripts, 1912-1913, 1921-1954; also includes a guest book, 1924-1956, posters, ca.1942, publications relating the story of Belmore Browne Peak, 1992-1993, and photographs, ca.1930, ca.1955, 1991-1992.; Diaries are mainly trip diaries pertaining to summer travels and family life in the Canadian Rockies, 1921-1933. Included are trips to Red Earth Creek, Skoki, Mystic Lake, Sawback Lake, Red Deer Valley, Hector Lake, Bow Lake, Kananaskis Valley, Cascade and Panther rivers, Elbow Pass, and other locations. Other diaries cover the years 1943 to 1954, years partly spent at Seebe until Belmore Browne's death. Diary copies and typescripts have been annotated by Evelyn Browne.; Posters on alpine and wilderness survival, ca.1942, were done by Belmore Browne for the American military's Arctic Training Program.; Photographs are mainly photographic copies of paintings by Belmore and George Browne produced by Peter A. Juley & Son, Photographers of Fine Arts, New York, ca.1955, 79 items.
