The man is seated against a background that is split vertically off center to the right; the left side, which is larger, is a deep brown/green colour, while the right side, which is smaller, contains a deep purple colour. The man is wearing a dark, presumably black garment, with a small white collar popping through at the neck. His skin is mostly fair, while his nose, lips, and ears are pink in colour. There are a series of small marks in the bottom left corner in varying shades of red, yellow ochre and brown. The bottom edge is unfinished, revealing the marks of the paintbrush over the raw canvas below.

The model has their left hand raised above his head. Below the work is says “School of Leonardo”. Beside the drawing to the left there is two lines of pencil running down the height of the portfolio, near one of the folds. On the left fold there is a Christmas tag that has two dogs, a woman in a blue dress, with a snowy scene behind them. On the tag it reads “From Gwen with love To Catharine + Pete I’m appallingly late! But we have had a fair amount of illness here + that does delay things!”On the verso of drawing it says “School of Leonardo L3.10x 132.58”, and in the BRC “8.C8”
