Summer 1969 time spent in Banff, along the Icefields Parkway, and in the Golden and Lake O'Hara areas as well as various club activities as part of the Alpine Club of Canada. Also includes lists of birds seen, reservation details, people met and staff of various places, events from Banff (including the death of Fred Brewster and Catharine Whyte receiving an honourary degree), song lyrics, and [what is possibly] a joke. M67 / 5 - 2 : black leather diary, dated 1970 in white ink (possibly white out) on the front cover. Pertains to a 1970 trip to the Canadian Rockies and includes hikes with and without organizations like the Alpine Club of Canada and the Sky Line Trail Hikers as well as stays at the Banff Springs Hotel, the ACC Club House, Lake O'Hara, and the Bugaboo Lodge, BC. Also includes transcriptions from the Abbot Pass Hut Register from 1926-1939 (presumably only of people Lillian Gest knew personally), reservation details, lists of people met, and a list of events from 1970, including the sale of the ACC Club House for $70, 000 (does not mention to who). Newspaper clipping on page 125 pertaining to the death of Edmee Brewster. Pertains to the summers of 1973 and 1974 spent in and around the Canadian Rockies. Summer 1973 includes stays in the Banff, Lake Louise, Lake O'Hara, and Bow Lake areas as well as hiking trips with and without organizations like the Sky Line Trail Hikers and the Alpine Club of Canada. Summer 1974 includes stays at various hotels around Banff and in the Lake Louise and Lake O'Hara areas, a helicopter trip to and from Mt. Assiniboine and region, and organized hiking trips with the Sky Line Trail Hikers. Also includes lists of staffs and people met, birds spotted at Lake O'Hara, distances, and a list of events from 1973. M67 / 5 - 6 : black leather diary, titled Sat July 20 1974 to 1975 - Thurs July 14 in ink on fabric [possibly plastic] adhered to the front cover. Pertains to the remainder of the summer 1974 trip (July-September) continued from M67 / 5 - 5 and details from June and July, 1975. The summer 1975 trip included travel between Banff and Pennsylvania by train [heading west] and plane [headed east], stays around Banff, Lake O'Hara, and Lake Louise, and hiking trips with and without organizations like the Sky Line Trail Hikers and the Alpine Club of Canada. Also includes lists of people met, reservation details, ACC Camp details for 1975, Sky Line Hikers trip dates and locations, and events from Banff 1975 including the ACC Club House being completely torn down. Pertains to trips taken to Jasper Park Lodge, Glacier Lake Camp, the Icefields Chalet, and Emerald Lake during the summer of 1940. Includes details of movies and photographs taken at the back of the diary. M67 / 2 - 2 : black leather diary, dated 41 in red paint (possibly ink) on the front cover. Pertains to trips to the Chateau Lake Louise. Twin Falls, and Emerald Lake taken during the summer of 1941. At least part of the summer was spent attending a motor car tour organized by Caroline Hinman. Also includes lists of names and addresses of other people who attended Hinman's tour, as well as details on milage and on films and photographs taken. M67 / 2 - 3 : black plastic 6-ring diary. Pertains to a collection of trip notes, mostly trips throughout the Canadian Rockies, from summer 1942 to summer 1945. Mostly consists of place names, people, and trip highlights - not much detail. M67 / 2 - 4 : black leather diary, dated 42 43 in red paint (possibly ink) on the front cover. Pertains to Alpine Club of Canada Camp at Consolation Lakes (July 19-24) and a stay at Deer Lodge at Lake Louise (Aug 16-22) in 1942, an informal ACC Camp at Lake O'Hara and a stay at Deer Lodge (Aug 16-18). For both summers she notes "In Browne House, Banff" which possibly could have been a home available for rent. Also includes details pertaining to the various costs of the trips (years not specified), the fish hatchery, a list of home movies from 1942, a list of stills (no date), and a list of equipment used at the ACC Camp in 1943. M67 / 2 - 5 : black leather diary, dated 44 45 in red paint on the front cover. Pertains to trips taken by Lillian Gest during the summers of 1944 and 1945. 1944 includes travelling from Toronto to Banff, staying at the Browne House (presumably a guest house or other such rental property), annual Alpine Club of Canada Camp in Paradise Valley, Trial Riders of the Canadian Rockies trip to Fatique Pass and Eohippus Lake. 1945 inlcudes travelling from Toronto to Banff, staying at the Browne House, annual ACC Camp in Larch Valley, Sky Line Trail Hikers trip in Lake O'Hara (Aug 3-6), and a trip with A. Harmon [?] to graveyard cabin and Summet Pass. Also includes a list of people met during these trips, a list of equipment left in the Browne House (1944), trees local to the Canadian Rockies, and a small sketch of downtown Banff focussed around the Bow River Bridge. M67 / 2 - 6 : black leather diary, dated 46 47 in red paint on the front cover. Trips taken during the summer of 1946 include staying at the Chateau Lake Louise (June 29-July 12), Emerald Lake [Lodge?] (July 12-Aug 2), annual Alpine Club of Canada Camp in the Bugaboos (July 13-24), Mitchell Hut, Yoho (July 26-30), Banff (Aug 2-Sept 3), and Bow Lake (Aug 3-9). Trips in 1947 included time spent in Calgary during the Stampede, annual ACC Camp, pack trip organized by Caroline Hinman, and time spent around the town of Banff. Also includes list of people met during trips, and milage and details about trip from Banff to Merion (September 1947). Also includes loose items consisting of letters (mostly addressed to Lillian Gest), brochures for the Sky Line Trail Hikers, Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies, and the Calgary Stampede, postcard, tellegram, trip itineraries and cost listings, and newspaper clippings.

- File pertains to seven diaries kept by Lillian Gest from 1957-1967 from travels throughout the Canadian Rockies, Europe, and the western United States. Includes: M67 / 4 - 1 : black leather diary, dated 57 58 59 in red paint on the front cover. Pertains to the last few days of the summer 1957 trip carried over from M67 / 3 - 6, a trip in 1958 involving travel to Banff, the annual Alpine Club of Canada hike, staying at the Chateau Lake Louise, hiking in Lake O'Hara, and travel back to Pennsylvania. Trip details for 1959 include travelling by train from the United States to Montreal before continuing on to Banff where she took trips to Lake O'Hara and Skoki - entries for 1959 seem to end abruptly. Also includes lists of people met over the three years, equipment used for various trips, and a list of events since Sept. 1958 including the opening of the new Sulphur gondola on July 28, 1958, the tearing down of the Brewster stables on Spray Ave, and the conversion of the ski lodge to the Post Hotel in Lake Louise. M67 / 4 - 2 : black leather diary, dated 59 in red paint and end 1959-1962 on a piece of paper taped to the front cover. Pertains to the remainder of August 1959 (carried over from M67 / 4 - 2), and summer trips taken during 1960-1962 consisting of time spent around the Banff townsite, Lake O'Hara, and Bow Lake areas, annual organized hikes with the Alpine Club of Canada, as well as travel to and from Pennsylvania - usually by train. Also includes lists of people she met, new additions to staff at hotels Lillian Gest stayed at, luggage details, and events pertaining to Banff like construction projects, births, marriages, and deaths (including the death of Jack White in 1962, his house now being a library, and the fate of the grocery store he ran). M67 / 4 - 3 : black leather diary, dated 1962-1964 in red paint on the cover. Pertains to the end of Lillian Gest's 1962 summer trip (carried over from M76 / 4 - 2) and trips taken during the summers of 1963 and 1964. The 1963 summer consists of travel from Pennsylvania to Banff by train, stays at various hotels (including the Club House [possibly the Alpine Club of Canada Club House], Moraine Lake Lodge, and Emerald Lake Lodge), hiking trips in Revelestoke Park and Lake O'Hara, the annual Sky Line Trail Hikers trip, and alternating between stays in Lake O'Hara and at the Club House before returning home. The 1964 summer followed a similar pattern, with stays at various hotels, hikes (both with and without organizations like the Sky Line Trail Hikers and the ACC), and travel between Pennsylvania and Banff by train. Also includes lists of people met during all three summers, equipment left in Banff (1963), a poem titled How To Die in the Mountains, evelvation of Golden, milages, and rates at the Lake O'Hara Lodge and Chateau Lake Louise. Pertains to trip to the Canadian Rockies during the summer of 1965. M67 / 4 - 4 : gold embossed red plastic spiral bound diary titled Can R. 1965 on adhesive paper on front cover. Pertains to the summer of 1965 and includes time spent in Banff, trips to and around Moraine Lake, Lake Louise, Lake O'Hara, the Icefiled Parkway, and Mt. Robson areas as well as stays at the The Club House (possibly the Alpine Club of Canada Club House), a trip with the Sky Line Trail Hikers in Little Yoho (Aug 1-5) and the annual ACC Camp (Aug 23 - Sept 3). The trip back to Pennsylvania was completed by train as far as Winnipeg, from where Gest took a plane. Also includes Lake O'Hara register notes, details on Yoho National Park, lists of mileages, books at the ACC Club House and its staff that year, 1965 events (unclear if entirely dedicated to Banff), and people met. M67 / 4 - 5 : gold embossed red plastic spiral bound diary. Pertains to a trip to Alaska during the summer of 1966 and a trip to Expo 67 in Montreal from June 21-26. Also includes details on animals and birds spotted in Alaska, people met, and names of staff at places Lillian Gest stayed. M67 / 4 - 6 : black leather diary, dated 1966 on a piece of paper taped to the front cover. Pertains to the remainder of Lillian Gest's summer 1966 travels throughout the Canadian Rockies (an extension of the Alaska trip detailed in M67 / 4 - 5). Also includes lists of items left in Banff and items purchased in both Alaska and Canada, reminders about correspondence, notes about Lake O'Hara, and events from Banff. M67 / 4 - 7 : brown cardstock diary with black fabric tape on spine. Pertains to a trip to the Canadian Rockies in the summer of 1967 and includes hiking trips with and without organizations like the Alpine Club of Canada and the Sky Line Trail Hikers, as well as stays in Banff, Lake Louise, Glacier, Lake O'Hara, and the [probably ACC] Club House. Also mentions Expo 67 (details of that trip in M67/ 4 - 5), and contains lists of staff at the Lake O'Hara Lodge, Chateau Lake Louise, and the Club House, as well as events from around Banff, including the Mount Royal Hotel burning down. Also includes loose items consisting of a brochure for the 1965 Sky Line Trail Hikers and address list, a letter from Caroline HInman regarding a 1959 trip plan, notes written by Lillian Gest [possibly reminders], a postcard, a Chirstmas letter from Peter and Catharine Whyte, and newspaper clippins.

Topics include: Breakfast being prepaired by Andy Taylor in front of the tent at Rush Pond and before starting out on that hectic 32 mile trudge into McCarthy, being the closing act of the field activities of the Mt. Logan Expedition. Rush Pond left with all gear left behind (protem) on July 12 at 10.10 A.M. arriving McCarthy 1.30 A.M. July 13 ; The first negative of close up in camp by H.F.L. other by Taylor of first relays to the top of the Quartz Ridge, 1000 feet above the Cascade camp site ; The process by which, with a 700 foot alpine line we were able to get one of the hand sleds to the summit of the quartz ridge from the Cascades camp below ; Cache and group at the top of the quartz ridge. This point being about 1000 feet above Cascades ; This is a photograph looking straight down the Ogilvie glacier from a point 1000 feet above its head. Its confluence with the Logan is distinctly seen ; A mere spot in a world of ice, cascades camp as viewed from above from the summit of the Quartz Ridge. This photograph shows well the base of the cascades and the character of the glaciers entering the head of the Ogilvie Gl. ; From a rock ridge where Morgan hand enticed me one afternoon we got this of the top of St. Elias appearing through the clouds. Below the surface of the King Glacier, end of the south wall of King Trench on left ; Large scale map of coast showing Cordova, McCarthy and Logan ; H.F.L. Read ; Standing group in parkas ; After an all night's travel on the Logan Glacier July 2-3 resting out on one of the central morains near the International Boundary Crossing of the Logan Glacier. Here the ice became so bad that the two sleds were left behind, cached a further amount of equipment, including stove and robe etc. & shouldered our loads for the remaining 30 miles into Hubricks Camp ; Portraits of all but Carpe, how he came to be missed unknown. Taken the day after we got into Hubricks before the grand shave & clean up. 1 MacCarthy 2 Foster 1 Andy Taylor 3 H.F.L 1 Read 1 H.M. Laing ; The making of two boats on arrival at Hubrick's camp on the 6th of July having originally been decided upon, now abandoned on acount of the condition of the party and the length of time to build (10 days) rafts in lieu of the boats finally decided upon. Two of these commenced July 8 and completed the 10th. and the journey started down the Chitina River at 1.30 P.M. July 11th. with desastrous results to one (MacCarthur, Foster, Carpe) and reaching Rush Pond with the other (Taylor, Lambart, Read) 12.30 midnight July 12, 60 miles by stream.

- File pertains to photographs - mostly prints, also negatives and one glass slide - of the Mount Logan Expedition of 1925. Photographs of the Mount Logan Expedition were mainly produced by H. F. Lambart; also some by A. H. MacCarthy. All images are housed in the original brown envelopes used by the ACC and contain typed notes on the exteriors. Topics include: Up King Col. "Observation Camp" foreground. Elevation of Camera 10,300 elevation on top of col over 4000 ft. above Camera ; Looking up the King Glacier to the summit of the Col of the same name from Observation Camp. The Camp in the foreground ; The King Glacier looking straight up to the Col Intense light under a blue sky ; The Camp actively engeged in getting away with the sleds up the King Glacier as fas as the ice fall, about 4 miles ; Observation Camp. King Mt. showing the north face, First sled on its way up the King Gl. off to right a few hundred yds. The Col tot he left hidden in fog ; Looking down the King Glacier, distance being the mountains around the head of the Vittorio Sella glacier. The direction is nearly due west ; A panorama of 8 from the King Col around past King mountain itself over 180 degrees to the ice wall on the N. side of the King Glacier trench. Taken from the site of King Col Camp ; Three of the party making camp digging out places for tents on the slopes of the Col. Direction westward down the King Glacier showing the distant ranges of the Quintino Sella Glacier and to the right the immense ice falls on the north side of the Col ; Preparing tent room on the summit of the King Col. behind the walls of ice and snow leading to the upper plateaus, the trail later marked out leading straight back then swinging to the right on the snow bench ; King Mountain from the Col ; Close up of party at work preparing camp ground. Hall [extreme] right. centre L to R Carpe, MacCarthy Foster ; These pictures taken towards the south over a sea of clouds obscuring the Seward and Malaspina glaciers and all the surrounding peaks leaving the top of St. Elias alone sticking up. The peak of King Mt. not more than 5 miles distant all showing, the sea of clouds showing beyond. Note the South butress of King and long ridge leading from teh peak to the right being the south wall of the King Glacier. King Col, is just below the ridge facing the picture and decending from the summit in a jagged arete ; This the only photograph I have of "Windy Camp" (16800) taken looking northward up the ice slopes followed on the ascent. Left the S.W. spur of the Logan massif ; Plateau Camp at an elevation of 17500 ft approximately, is the camp from which Mt. Logan was climbed on the 23 of June. These pictures were taken on a clear morning and it is hard to explain the failure in the results obtained. The panorama shows the upper glacier plateau below the high summits of the massif. The photograph sweeps the northern horizon through about a half circle. Distant rangers shown are those of the walsh Glacier and west end of the glacier and mountain system between the base of Logan and Kluane Lake, 60 miles eastward.

Lambart; also some by A. H. MacCarthy. All images are housed in the original brown envelopes used by the ACC and contain typed notes on the exteriors. Topics include: Going into our first camp on the bars of the Chitina River being a half days run from "Rush Pound," where we stopped and had lunch on the way in ; Packing up at Brysons, being the old camp ground of the Surveys (Barny Bryson) and from which point a trail leads out of the valley of the Chitina (rising 3000 ft) and leading to the head of the Young Creek. MacCarthy took this trail coming in coming out last summer after the reconnaissance. This is the 4th. camp out from McCarthy the next 16 miles to Short River ; Short river Camp, 5th camp out from McCarthy and only 7 miles out from Hubricks. Mountain in back on other side of Chitina Valley. Crossed Clear Water, Canon and Short river before reaching this camp ; Eastward up the valley of the Chitina Valley Tree islands and the morain covered toe of the Chitina Glacier showing. Hubricks Camp near point shown on left, just showing ; The Chitina Valley below Hubrick's Camp distant horizon being the toe of the Chitina Glacier. Mt. Logan would be, if visible, direct centre looking up Chitina Gl. ; Panorama taken from a point on the Chitina just off the N.W. corner of the Chitina Glacier toe, at an old Trig Sta. which seemed to be part of old base line. Shows the range on the south side of the Chitina Valley and the last straight down the valley of the Chitina ; All a little blurred as focus in error set at 15 yrd. Panorama of the range on the south side of the Chitina River Valley, from a point 1/3 mile east of Hubrick's Camp. Logan in distant centre in 433 & 434 [452 & 453] ; Laing in front of his dungeon (Pup Tent). The afternoon's careful inspection of Logan equipment ; Survey tripod on the bars below toe of Chitina Glacier to N.W. line of bace line poasts leading away to W. No end of base mark showing ; From the summit point of the Terminal morains of the Chitina Glacier looking straight west down the valley and showing the trench between the glacier and the N. wall of the valley up which the trail lead to the last point of horse transport, "Trail End" ; The group on the ice in front of "Trail end Camp" ; Ice of the Chitina completely covered with debris, from the shore line on the N. side looking forward to Chitina Point ; Walsh camp at the end of the Chitina Point, the side of an old survey camp of 1913, facing a stretch of water directly off the point, the junctions of the Chitina and Walsh Glaciers ; Group, as per preceding negative showing drift and exposed dry wood on beech, old shore of long since sunken lake.
