History / Biographical
Charles S. Thompson, 1864-1921, was a mountaineer and General Agent for the Illinois Central Railroad in the United States. Thompson was active in Boston's Appalachian Mountain Club and participated in that organization's climbing camp in the Canadian Rockies in 1895. He accompanied parties to the summit of Mount Hector and Mount Stephen that year and was present on the attempt of Mount Lefroy which resulted in the death of friend Philip Stanley Abbot.

History / Biographical
James Edward Deegan, 1926-1996, was born in Banff, Alberta, Canada. His mother was Mary Edith Woodworth. Deegan became a national park warden in 1945 and, in the winters, worked as a packer and ski guide for Norman Watson at Skoki Lodge. Jim "Timberline" Deegan wrote poetry throughout his career and in 1977 he published "Timberline Tales" with his friend John "Dolomite" Porter. A revised version of "Timberline Tales," containing only Deegan's work, was published in 1993. Deegan retired from the warden service in the 1980s. He died in January 1996 after a lengthy illness.

Fonds consists of manuscripts, undated; correspondence, 1944-1992, including many letters from John Porter; letters to warden Keith Everts, 1992-1995; personal papers and photographs, ca.1905-1979; warden diary, 1945-1947; notes written for Keith Everts, 1992-1995, pertaining to warden history, individual wardens, personal experiences and patrol accounts, warden cabins, elk, etc.; certificates, 1979, 1990; letters re death and transport of remains to Castleguard area, 1996; clippings, n.d., 1971-1979; Woodworth family postcards, ca.1910.
Textual material pertains to: Jim Deegan; John Porter; warden service including elk slaughter, fire fighting and patrols; skiing in the Skoki region; poetry; and Woodworth family. Includes "Poems, over the rim with Timberline Jim - tales from behind the jackpine curtain" by Jim Deegan and John Porter; also other poems by Deegan, Porter and other poets.
Photographs pertain to Jim Deegan, associates, friends and family; wardens, warden activities and warden cabins; bridge building, buildings in Banff; final resting place in Castleguard area; also views of ski touring in the Skoki region by John Porter. One album contains postcard views of the Canadian Rockies and the American northwest, many by Byron Harmon. One album "High Solitudes" documents a trip Jim Deegan and John Porter took together ca.1950. Album was compiled by John Porter and contains 14 prints; quotations are Jim Deegan's and taken from his book "Timberline Tales", 1977.

Marjorie Helen Folger Dean (b.1902 in Fargo, North Dakota, d.1974) and her family lived at Laggan, Lake Louise ca.1906-1918. Her father, William Dean (1878-1974) was a locomotive engineer with the C.P.R., 1911-1922. Her mother, Sarah Elizabeth Folger Dean, was born in 1883 in Delhi, Ontario and died in 1963. Marjorie Dean married Hargreaves Greenhough on August 6, 1925 in Edmonton, Alberta.

History / Biographical
David McDougall, son of George Millward McDougall and Elizabeth Chantler McDougall, was born on May 14, 1845 in Owen Sound, Ontario. David had four siblings: John, Eliza, Lubby, and Nellie. David married Annie McKenzie in 1871 in Manitoba. Together, they had six children, including their daughter named Georgina (Georgie) Elizabeth McDougall (1872-1965). Georgina was the wife of Norman Luxton and an active member in Banff and the mother of Eleanor Georgina Luxton (1908-1995). David was an early pioneer of Calgary and Banff, who helped build both community life and their economies. While David’s father and brother were both members of the clergy and did missionary work in Morley, Alberta, David become a successful businessman. He established a general merchant store in Morley where he was a dealer in cattle, horses, furs, and curios. In addition to managing his own business block in Calgary, David also owned properties in Edmonton and Calgary. In Banff, David and Annie owned the Mount Royal Hotel for six years until they sold it to Jim Brewster in August 14, 1913. David died in December 6, 1927 and Annie died in 1939.

Fonds consists of six series: 1. Business Correspondence; 2. Cheques, Receipts, Invoices; 3. Personal Documents; 4. Miscellaneous; 5. Blueprints; 6. Painting. Series 1 consists of business related correspondence to various companies, individuals, and two branches of the Canadian Government. Government correspondence pertains to taxes and by-laws for McDougall’s properties. Series 2 contains invoices, receipts, cheques, and bank statements pertaining to McDougall’s business and properties. Series 3 contains personal letters and legal documents. Materials includes handwritten letters, property transactions and proof of ownership on properties. Series 4 contains cheque books, Dominion Travellers’ Hotel Guide, event program featuring Commissioner Coombs and “Safety First Guarantee” slip. Series 5 contains blueprints of Mount Royal Hotel and McDougall business block, Calgary 1911. The last series consist of a painting of George Noble photograph of Banff Ave, 1929.

Sarah Luxton sub-sub-series (C1 - 10 to 13) consists of correspondence; a memorial service notice for Ada L. Luxton; poetry by J. Luxton (possibly Sarah Jane Luxton, the mother of Norman K. Luxton); a cemetery register; a life insurance policy draft.
George Edwards Luxton sub-sub-series (C1 - 14 to 20) consists of newspaper clippings, literary manuscripts written by George Luxton, letters and receipts relating to the the Lux Theatre in Banff, Alberta, mortgage papers, a press certificate and one photograph accompanying a letter by Harold Malloch Luxton.
Louis Luxton sub-sub-series (C1 - 21 to 26) consists of personal and business correspondence,1905-1948 and includes one b&w photograph of Harold Malloch Luxton. Business correspondence includes letters from the Department of Interior - Rocky Mountain Parks and Insurance Companies. Also includes a court summons from the Government of Alberta, 1948.
