History / Biographical: Howard Palmer, 1883-1944, was a lawyer, businessman and mountaineer at Massachusetts, USA. Palmer was a prominent climber and explorer in the Rocky and Selkirk Mountains of western Canada between 1908 and 1927, completing about fifty first ascents. In the period before WWI, Palmer travelled extensively in the Selkirk Mountains with a group of mountaineering enthusiasts headed by E. W. D. Holway. Palmer published "Mountaineering and Exploration in the Selkirks" in 1914, was an active photographer, and worked on numerous topographical maps and expedition plans, including that of the 1925 Mount Logan expedition. In 1923, Palmer and Allen Carpe travelled, climbed and mapped in the Maligne Lake area. Howard Palmer was active in the American Alpine Club.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of a file of 46 photographic prints by Howard Palmer, 1924, and two individual prints, 1910. History / Biographical: Hans Gmoser, 1932-2006 was born in Braunau, Austria in 1932. During his long career he worked as a mountain guide, mountaineer, ski instructor, skier, cinematographer, lecturer, and founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Canadian Mountain Holidays. Hans Gmoser was also an active cyclist and was based in Banff and Harvie Heights, Alberta.; Gmoser gained early skiing and mountaineering experience in post-war Austria before emigrating to Canada with his friend Leo Grillmair in 1951. Lizzie Rummel gave him his first job in the mountains at Mount Assiniboine. By 1953 he was working as a mountain guide and founded Rocky Mountain Guides Ltd. (Canadian Mountain Holidays CMH) in 1957. That year he began filming promotional films containing climbing and skiing adventure sequences. He first used fixed-wing aircraft and later helicopters, starting in 1963, to transport clients for spring skiing and summer climbing. Gmoser toured throughout North America promoting his skiing and climbing films, attracting large audiences with his inspiring lectures.; Gmoser built Bugaboo Lodge in 1968, the first of six lodges which also include Bobbie Burns, Galena, Gothics, Adamants and Cariboo lodges, to serve international heli-skiers and heli-hikers. Gmoser retired from Canadian Mountain Holidays in 1993. Hans Gmoser received honourary memberships in the Alpine Club of Canada and the International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations. He was elected to the Honour Roll of Canadian Skiing and the U.S. National Ski Hall of Fame and received the Banff Mountain Film Festival Summit of Excellence Award. In 1987 Hans Gmoser was awarded the Order of Canada.

Robson, Wapta Glacier, Columbia Icefields, Canoe Glacier, Rodgers pass trip, mountaineering clubs, Trudeau/Bugaboo trip, Assiniboine Lodge, portraits of Lizzie Rummel, Erling Strom, and Jim Davies. Albums consist of photographs taken during ski trips in Austria.; Films depict a mixture of skiing and climbing including spring skiing, powder skiing, glacier skiing on Columbia Icefield, heli-skiing in the Rockies and Selkirks and ascents of Mount Logan, Yukon, and Mounts Blackburn and McKinley, Alaska, also rock and ice climbing. History / Biographical: Arnold Wexler, 1918-1997, was a research engineer and mountaineer in the Washington, DC area of the United States. He was a member of numerous scientific and mountaineering organizations and was actively involved in the testing of mountaineering equipment. Wexler climbed extensively in North America, Europe and South America, and also travelled throughout Asia. He is credited with over 100 ascents, almost half being first ascents.; Wexler was a key organizer and participant of expeditions to western and northern Canada beginning in 1946. Noteworthy ascents of that first expedition, to the northern Selkirks of British Columbia, were the second ascent of Mount Sir Sandford and first ascents of Sentinel Peak, Unicorn and East Blackfriar. Also, near the end of that trip, an accident claimed the life of an expedition member. Wexler and his associates made annual expeditions and trips to Canada from 1946 until 1955, and subsequently in the years 1961, 1962, 1963, and 1970 through 1974

History / Biographical: "Across the Great Divide," called "Mountain Maverick" during production, 1977, directed by Stewart Raffill and starring Robert Logan, Heather Rattery, and Mark Edward Hall. Set in the American Rockies, 1876, a pair of orphans, aided by an itinerant gambler, make their way west through the wilderness to inherit a ranch in Oregon. Location filming primarily around the Seebe area, including Mickey Bailey's Wildlife Unlimited game farm at the base of Yamnuska, and the Mount Assiniboine area.
