Summer 1924 consists of early details for a trip organized by Caroline Hinman and mainly of lists of names of those included. Summer 1981 consists of time spent predominantly in and around the Lake Louise and Lake O'Hara areas, with shorter stays in Banff at the beginning and end of the trip. Also includes details of a climbing trip two people took over Wenkchemna Pass on Aug 9, lists of people met, staff of businesses around Banff, and telephone numbers. History / Biographical
Aileen Harmon (1912 - 2015), daughter of Byron Harmon, worked as a government naturalist at Banff, Alberta, Canada and was involved in local natural history groups and activities. Aileen was a founding member, alongside Bruce Gordon, of the Bow Valley Naturalists, and was also on the Board of The Canadian Wildlife Federation and The Society of Alberta Naturalists. Aileen moved to Mill Bay on Vancouver Island, B.C. in 1981 following the end of a lengthy career with Parks Canada. During her retirement years, Aileen travelled extensively, reaching all seven continents. She also authored an autobiographical book, titled "Tales of My Mountain Life", in 2004. Aileen passed away on January 9, 2015 at the age of 102.
Scope & Content
Fonds consists of textual records and photographs by and about Aileen Harmon, as well as collected items. Textual records include: letter from Harmon to the Director of Alberta's provincial parks re addition of Yamnuska area to Bow Valley Provincial Park, 1973; brief, from Harvie Heights and Bow Valley subdivision residents to public hearings on land use and resource development in the eastern slopes, 1973; letter re James Hector, 1979; notes on career, 2003; notes on Catharine Whyte for CBC recording, 2004; Christmas cards and collected articles, ca.1960. Photographs, made by and collected by Aileen Harmon, pertain to Aileen Harmon and friends, skiing, Skoki area, Mount Yamnuska, Banff Indian Days. Includes photographs by Byron Harmon. Carole Harmon, b.1947, writer, publisher, photographer and businesswoman at Banff, Alberta, Canada, was instrumental in securing the preservation and exhibition of the photographs of her grand-father, Byron Harmon.
Scope & Content
Fonds consists mainly of textual records in the form of correspondence, reports, grant applications, etc. pertaining to the preservation, duplication and exhibition of Byron Harmon photograph collection, 1973-1983; correspondence, research notes and photocopies of primary and secondary sources on Byron Harmon biography and cinematography, ca.1902-1977. Also includes ephemeral material from Merry-Go-Round Theatre productions in which Carole Harmon was involved as a child, ca.1952-1960. Sound recording is an interview by Aileen, Carole and Don Harmon with Edward Feuz, recorded while the group looked at photographs. It pertains to trips with Byron Harmon and Harmon's photography and film making career; also, Feuz's life and guiding career, clients, trips. Photographs pertain to Merry-Go Round Theatre productions, Carole Harmon and other participants.
