History / Biographical
Charles S. Thompson, 1864-1921, was a mountaineer and General Agent for the Illinois Central Railroad in the United States. Thompson was active in Boston's Appalachian Mountain Club and participated in that organization's climbing camp in the Canadian Rockies in 1895. He accompanied parties to the summit of Mount Hector and Mount Stephen that year and was present on the attempt of Mount Lefroy which resulted in the death of friend Philip Stanley Abbot.
Scope & Content
Fonds consists of letters, 1897-1916, 1924, and photographs, ca.1902. Correspondents include J. Norman Collie, A. L. Mumm and Philip S. Abbot's mother. Also includes a letter to Mrs. Ruth Thompson from Harry P. Nichols of the American Alpine Club, 1924, re Thompson's mountaineering papers. Photographs pertain to Charles S. Thompson, Ruth Gage Thompson, Norman Collie and mountaineering, ca.1902.
