History / Biographical
Charles S. Thompson, 1864-1921, was a mountaineer and General Agent for the Illinois Central Railroad in the United States. Thompson was active in Boston's Appalachian Mountain Club and participated in that organization's climbing camp in the Canadian Rockies in 1895. He accompanied parties to the summit of Mount Hector and Mount Stephen that year and was present on the attempt of Mount Lefroy which resulted in the death of friend Philip Stanley Abbot.

Fonds consists of letters, 1897-1916, 1924, and photographs, ca.1902. Correspondents include J. Norman Collie, A. L. Mumm and Philip S. Abbot's mother. S. (Stephen) J. Thompson, 1864-1930, was a professional photographer and publisher at New Westminster and Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada from 1885-ca.1900. Thompson photographed along the line of the Canadian Pacific Railway in western Canada.

Fonds consists primarily of views along the Canadian Pacific Railway, Vancouver, B.C. to Canmore, Alberta. Also includes Banff views, including Banff Springs Hotel, Cave and Basin, Bow Valley, Banff townsite and Brett Hospital operating room. Some prints were probably originally included in viewbooks. Fonds also consists of 20 8x10" Print Out Paper photographs by S. J. Thompson "Twenty Real Photographs of Scenes of British Columbia."

William J. (Bill) Ross, 1914-1992, lived at Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He was a long-time friend of Jim and Dorothy Boyce and was associated with George Browne through mutual membership in the Calgary Fish and Game Association. Ross took up historical research and writing after his retirement.
