- Humphrey Toms was a young man in 1933 when he carried an introduction from a family friend to Mary Warren because he had an interest in botany. An occasional correspondence began with Mrs. Warren up to her death in 1939, influencing Toms' decision to study botany. Toms lived at Victoria, B.C. in his later years.
