Includes mountain views, portraits, people climbing, glaciers, and an ACC Annual Camp. Hinman Horseback and Camping Trip - July 1-17 [1932] depicts the annual backcountry horse trip organized by Caroline Hinman around the Mt. Assiniboine and East Kootenay areas of British Columbia. Includes scenic views, horses, camps, portraits, and two pages dedicated to the Hinman Party in August - it is not clear if Lillian Gest participated in the whole of Caroline Hinman's summer 1932 trip. At the Alpine Club Camp depicts the ACC Annual Camp for 1932, based in Glacier, BC. Includes the ACC camp, mountains, glaciers, portraits, scenic views, climbing, swimming, Abbot Pass Hut, Glacier Circle Cabin, enlargements, and greeting cards. Following the annotated ACC trip photographs are a collection of greeting cards, newspaper clippings, and misc. photographs from Gest's various trips during the summer of 1932. Most of these photographs are not annotated. Also includes greeting cards from trip members and a memorial card for Conrad Kain fixed to the inside back cover. Inserts 1 and 3 pertain to the overview/advertisement for the Summer 1932 and 1933 trips that would have been sent out by Caroline Hinman in advance detailing routes, expectations, and prices. History / Biographical: Dr. Jean Knox (McDonald) Petrie, born 1913, was an active member of the Alpine Club of Canada, Edmonton Section during the 1930s and 1940s, attending the Alpine Club of Canada summer camps from 1937-1940, 1942 and 1946 as well as making many weekend climbs in the Jasper area with Captain E. R. Gibson. In 1938 she was one of the four women to make a first ascent of Mount Columbia by women, as well as Mount Forbes in 1940. Married in 1960 to Robert Petrie (died 1966), Dr. Jean Petrie worked in Ottawa, Ontario (1940-1945) in munitions gauge testing for the National Research Council. Following the war, she worked as an astrophysicist for the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory in Victoria, British Columbia (1945-1966) and taught at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, British Columbia. (1966-1971).

Scope & Content: Fonds relate to mountaineering with the Alpine Club of Canada. The fond consists of three series: I. Textual records consist of 8 newsclippings from July 1938 pertaining to the first ascent of Mount Columbia by women: Lillian Gest, Kathleen Chapman, Christine Reid, Jean McDonald, and Jean Petrie as well as a photocopied "Guide to the Tonquin" signed by K. G. Chapman ca.1935. II. Photographic records include an unbound album of 44 pages: 111 prints divided by the donor into 3 sections: 1. To the Tonquin Valley, July 1938; 2. History / Biographical: Allan E. Crawford (1900-1989) of Calgary, Alberta and Prince Rupert, British Columbia, was a member of the Sky Line Trail Hikers from 1937 to 1946 and was the "Official Musician of the Sky Line Trail Hikers" in 1937, 1938, 1940, and 1941. He also participated in Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies trips from 1937, 1938, 1940, 1941 as their musician. Allan E. Crawford appeared on Calgary radio station CFCN "The Voice of the Prairies" on a live weekly program, with the music trio "The Gamboliers" playing the accordian with Eddie Clemens on guitar and J.E. Gerke on vocals. Allan also played the organ, piano and harmonica.

History / Biographical: William D. Buck, 1859-1922, was born in England and is thought to have served during the First World War with the 103 Calgary Rifles. Buck was a Sergeant at the Banff and Castle Mountain internment camps, ca.1915-1917, and appears to have accompanied prisoners to a camp at Kapuskasing, Ontario after closure of the Castle Mountain camp in 1917.

Scope & Content: File pertains to a photograph album depicting snapshots of prisoners of war and surroundings taken by Seargent William D. Buck of the Banff, Castle Mountain, and Kapuskasing, ON, internment camps during World War I. Photograph album includes Banff and Kapuskasing River views; Castle and Banff internment camps views of prisoners, guards, facilities, activities, incidents and visit of Duke of Connaught and Princess Patricia; gathering of prisoners at Winnipeg and life at Kapuskasing internment camp; prisoners and Cave and Basin bathing, more Banff camp views and funeral photographs; family portraits, Banff and possible Calgary; and Sergeant Buck.
