The film was directed by Robert Altman and co-written by Robert Altman and Alan Rudolph. Key stars in the film include Paul Newman (Buffalo Bill), Frank Kaquitts (Sitting Bull), Joel Grey (The Producer), and Kevin McCarthy (The Publicist). Other actors include Harvey Keitel, Allan F. Nicholls, Geraldine Chaplin, John Considine, Fred N. Larsen, Pat McCormick and Burt Lancaster. The movie was filmed on location at the Stoney Nakoda reservation in Morley, Alberta, and many of the film extras were from this community. Stoney Nakoda Chief Frank Kaquitts (Sitting Wind) played the role of Sitting Bull
