- History / Biographical
- Ronald Leslie Duke, 1912-1978, was a professional photographer at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Born in Calgary, Alberta, Duke was educated at Calgary, Banff and the University of Washington in Seattle, USA. After wartime service with the National Film Board of Canada, Ron Duke returned to Banff, where he worked in the photography business for the next thirty years. Here he formed a link in a business lineage of photographers, including George Noble, and was for a time an employee of Noble's corporate successors. After 1958, Duke worked closely with the Banff School of Fine Arts, photographing productions and providing documentary services. After sustaining considerable damage in a fire which destroyed Banff's Mount Royal Hotel in 1967, Ron Duke's business resumed and, in partnership with George Baracos, continued until retirement in 1975.

- Gilbert M. Atkin, 1877-1969, came to Banff in 1905 shortly after completion of postgraduate studies in medicine. He first worked with Dr. Brett and continued to practice medicine in Banff, where he raised his family. During the First World War, Atkin served in the Canadian Army Medical Corps.

- Fonds consists of postcards, 1934-1937; military papers, 1916-1918; financial papers, 1922; miscellaneous papers, ca.1910-1955; photographs, ca.1900-1968. Textual records are primarily military medical material. Financial papers pertain to medical equipment. Includes a speech re Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire (I.O.D.E.), n.d., delivered at the Chateau Rundel [sic]; report, Whistler Mountain Ski Lift and Chalet, 1954-1955; and architectural drawing of plan and elevation for 94 Banff Avenue, ca.1910, accompanied by note of "additions and corrections". Photographs pertain to Gilbert Atkin, family, friends and associates, Banff region activities and views, Brett Hospital, curling and Rocky Mountains scenic views.
