- Arthur Oliver Wheeler (1860-1945) DLS, ALS, BCLS, was born in Ireland, arriving in Canada in 1876. Wheeler was a mountaineer, co-founder of the Alpine Club of Canada (1906), and Dominion Land Surveyor. In 1913, Wheeler was appointed Boundary Commissioner and tasked with photo surveying the Alberta / British Columbia interprovincial boundary.
- Scope & Content
- Fonds consists of 53 diaries pertaining to personal life, travel, office work, and Alpine Club of Canada camps. Diaries range in date from 1885 to 1944. Also included are two volumes/scrapbooks compiled by A.O. Wheeler. Both volumes include numerous articles, newspaper clippings, letters, ACC brochures and notices addressed to ACC members. Volume one covers the period 1902 to 1913; volume two includes materials from 1914 to 1940. A inventory of both volumes, compiled by ACC member Paul Geddes, is also included. Additionally there are 7 volumes of notes corresponding to the photographs A.O. Wheeler took. Photographic material consists of 66 albums which contain approximately 5000 photographs, black and white positive prints from glass negatives, all 12 x 16 cm. The first album is dated 1915, the last 1924. Some of the albums contain a small map printed on linen. Each album contains an index to the photographs taken for the Alberta - British Columbia Interprovincial Boundary photo survey and are organized by Station, Bearing, and Subject.

- History / Biographical
- Robert George Brett, 1851-1929, was a prominent physician, hotel-hospital owner, businessman and politician Banff, Alberta from 1883 until 1929. Brett was born in Strathroy, Ontario, son of James Brett and Catherine Mallon. He was educated as a physician at the University of Toronto (M.D., 1874), and practiced medicine at Arkona, Ontario. He moved to Winnipeg in 1880, where he helped found the Manitoba Medical College.
- R. G. Brett moved to Banff in 1886, founding the Banff Sanitarium. In 1909 he established the Brett Hospital. Brett also had numerous other businesses and real estate in Banff (including the National Park Drug Store, the Sanitarium Bottling Co., the Bretton Hall Hotel, Lithia Bottling Co.) and elsewhere.
- In 1878, Brett married Louise Theodora Hungerford, 1855-1935, of Waterford, Ontario. Of their five children, only two survived infancy, Reginald H. "Harry", 1879-1925, and Robert Earle, 1887-1912. Earle Brett was survived by Maidie (Stacpole) Brett, whom he married in 1910, and by an infant daughter. Dr. Harry Brett was married to Helen Brett, 1877-1964, who outlived the rest of her family by many years. Associated closely with the Brett family was Dr. Brett's nurse, Annie McLauchlin.
- From 1881 to 1901, R. G. Brett was Conservative Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the North-West Territories, and from 1889 to 1891 he was president of the executive council. He was Lieutenant-Governor of Alberta from 1915 to 1925. He died in Calgary.

- Edward Feuz Jr., 1884-1981, was a Canadian Pacific Railway mountain guide at Lake Louise, Alberta and Glacier and Golden, British Columbia, Canada. Feuz was the son of one of the first Swiss Guides brought to Canada by the Canadian Pacific Railway. He climbed at Field and Glacier House in 1903 with his father and guided during summers from 1905 to 1912, settling that year in the Edelweiss Village at Golden, British Columbia. Until his retirement in the 1950s, he accompanied the finest climbers and was involved in over seventy first ascents of peaks over 3048 metres.

- Fonds consists of photographs, 1911-ca.1958; professional papers, 1901-1957; letters, 1941-1961; scrapbook, 1923-1972; and newsclippings, 1969.
- Photographs pertain mainly to mountaineering trips and climbs, mainly led by Edward Feuz Jr. in the Rocky and Selkirk Mountains, and includes many first ascents. Many photographs were taken by clients who sent copies to Feuz. Photographs also pertain to clients, associates and friends, Lake Louise Chalet and Chateau Lake Louise, Lake Louise area, Feuz homes at Edelweiss and Golden, and scenic views in the Rocky and Selkirk Mountains. Negatives are largely unidentified. Original colour transparencies by Edward Feuz, ca.1950-ca.1976, pertain to trips and scenic views in the Rocky Mountains. ; Professional papers include: Feuz's fuhrer-buch (guidebook) containing his certification as a Swiss Guide and testimonials from clients in Switzerland and Canada, 1901-1957; certificate of life membership, Alpine Club of Canada, 1947; and records of climbs re the Chateau Lake Louise, 1913-1930. Letters, scrapbook and clippings all pertain to Feuz's career, clients and mountaineering.

- George Browne (1918-1958) was the youngest child of artist Belmore Browne (1881-1954) and writer Agnes Evelyn (Sibley) Browne (1882-1976). George's parents purchased a summer home in Banff in 1921, and throughout his childhood George travelled across Canada and the United States, spending much of this time camping and hiking in the Canadian Rockies where his father drew inspiration for his wildlife and landscape art. George first began to develop his drawing and painting skills as a child and young adult by learning from his father. George attended the California School of Fine Arts for five years from the age of 15, before being drafted into the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II. George continued to paint during and after his military service, and from 1947 George dedicated most of his time to his art. George Married Isabel "Tibby" Magregor in 1948, and the couple moved to a cabin in the Canadian Rockies shortly afterwards where they had two children. In his spare time, George was an avid hunter and outdoorsman and went on numerous duck-hunting trips with his dog, an Irish Setter named Kelly O'Toole. George died during a hunting accident in 1958.

Content pertains to a boat cruise attended by Eleanor Luxton to Hawaii, Japan and China [1937]. Includes images of the interior and exterior of the cruise ship, as well as cruise staff members and on-board entertainment; landscapes, monuments and buildings; surfing; historic sites; dockyard scenes with unidentified workers; local individuals and families; and fishing and harvesting. Album also includes small tissue-like paper sheet with hand-drawn diagram of mechanical parts and measurements with annotations [possibly belonging to Eleanor Luxton, n.d.]

- History / Biographical
- Helen Louise (Fulmer) Wells, 1893-1980, was a long-time resident of Banff, Alberta, Canada. She was the daughter of pioneer Banff residents Minnie Christina Fulmer, 1868-1962, and Walter P. Fulmer, 1863-1948. The family also included another daughter, Alice G. Fulmer, 1896-1989. The Fulmers were very active in local life and recreation and made numerous trips in the Canadian Rockies. In 1927, Helen Fulmer married Fred Wells, 1873-1975. The couple lived in Banff until the death of Fred Wells in 1975 at which time Helen Wells retired to Edmonton. Helen Wells was particularly interested in the history and Banff and area.

Textual records include three scrapbooks which contain clippings, photographs, notes and ephemera dating from 1886 to 1976 and pertain to Banff and area history, Fulmer family, royal family, etc. Remaining textual material includes Fulmer family papers and other material. Photographs, [ca.1880]-1972, pertain to Fulmer family, friends, trips and activities; as well as Banff and area locations, scenery, personalities and events. Includes Banff Winter Carnival, Banff Indian Days, snowshoe tramps, views of Banff and area, Banff Avenue, dwellings, buildings and hotels, including Banff Springs Hotel and Lake Louise Chalet; also Anthracite, Alberta.
