- History / Biographical
- In the 1920s John Murray Gibbon, Head of the Publicity Department of the Canadian Pacific Railway, recommended the creation of new activities and recreational pursuits for tourists visiting the national parks. Gibbon decided that horseback riding and sleeping outdoors in tents, teepees, or railway bungalow camps would appeal to many tourists and the Skyline Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies was established. Outdoor enthusiasts who visited Banff annually along with Banff and area residents proposed a similar organization for hikers. Gibbon responded with the Skyline Trail Hikers of the Canadian Rockies, with their inaugural hike occurring in 1933. The first annual meeting of the Skyline Trail Hikers of the Canadian Rockies was held immediately following the first hike and N.B. Sanson, retired meteorologist of Banff, became the Club's first president. The five vice-presidents elected were: Major Selby Walker of Calgary, Peter Whyte of Banff, Carl Rungius of New York, Ian Somerville of Philadelphia, and Miss Georgina Englehard of New York. A secretary-treasurer and council members were also elected and a certified hiking mileage of 25 miles in the Canadian Rockies was set as the criteria for admission of new members.
- In 1961 C.P.R. sponsorship ceased for both the Trail Riders and the Trail Hikers of the Canadian Rockies. Both groups re-organized as separate volunteer, non-profit organizations and the Skyline Trail Hikers of the Canadian Rockies was renamed the Skyline Hikers of the Canadian Rockies. The offices of the five vice-presidents as well as the honourary president were discontinued and replaced with an executive commitee consisting of President, Vice-President, Executive Secretary, and Committee Chairperson.

- The Elizabeth Parker hut was named after one of the founding members of the Alpine Club of Canada, Elizabeth Parker. The hut is located in Yoho National Park, near Lake O'Hara in British Columbia. The hut is one of the most popular accommodations run by the Alpine Club of Canada. The Elizabeth Parker hut is made up of two buildings; the main hut and Wiwaxy Cabin. The total capacity of the two buildings is 24 people in the summer and 20 people in the winter. According to the Alpine Club of Canada Guide for Backcountry Huts: Elizabeth Parker Info Sheet: "The present Wiwaxy cabin was the first hut in the Lake O’Hara area, built in 1912 by the Canadian Pacific Railway. This was the same year that the ACC applied for and was granted a two-acre lease for a future hut on the south shore of Lake O’Hara, the site of the Club’s 1909 annual camp. In 1919, the CPR built the present Elizabeth Parker Hut, and by 1923 had built a further 11 huts in the meadow. In 1923/24, the CPR moved all but the first two huts down to the lakeshore, and seven years later donated the last two in the meadow to the ACC. The Club was able to exchange its lakeshore lease for a meadow lease, and in 1931 was in business with a hut at Lake O’Hara - the Elizabeth Parker Hut. As you can expect with log buildings, the Elizabeth Parker Hut has required substantial renovations and upkeep. Over the years the hut has seen a new floor, a new roof, new timbers and new foundation logs, as well as completely new interior furnishings. The outhouses are new, a stove in the Wiwaxy Cabin has been added and the entire meadow around the hut has been rehabilitated and reseeded. Over the past couple of years, the Huts Committee has worked very hard to restore the appearance of the hut as closely as possible to its original state. - The Wates-Gibson Memorial Hut is located in the Emerite/Tonquin Valley of Jasper National Park in Alberta. According to the Alpine Club of Canada Backcountry Huts: Wates-Gibson Info Sheet: "The present Wates-Gibson Memorial Hut is the third ACC structure on the third different plot of land to serve skiers and climbers in the Emerite-Tonquin Valley. The original Memorial Hut was on Penstock Creek some 500 metre north of the present hut site. It was built in 1930 and lasted 17 years before the foundation gave way and a better location was sought. The Wates-Memorial Hut remained for the next 12 years on the north shore of Outpost Lake. Unfortunately the location was too close to the shore of the lake for expansion, and in 1959 when the ACC applied to Jasper National Park for a permit to enlarge the hut, it was turned down. The completely new Wates Gibson Memorial Hut was built on the present site in 1959 after the idea of moving the existing hut and then renovating it was rejected. The Edmonton section of the ACC initiated the idea for a climbing and skiing hut in the Jasper area in 1927, but found they could not finance it alone. They approached the National Club to assist with the financing, specifically from two funds: the Soldier’s Memorial Fund, set up in remembrance of Canadians who gave their lives in the Great War, and the Slark-Rutishauser Fund, established in the memory of the first ascentionists of Dedoubt Peak in the Ramparts. Redoubt, named in concurrence to a protected place of refuge; ironically, Slark and Rutishauser apparently had an accident while descending and they were never seen again. The first hut, built on the north shore of Penstock Creek in 1930 with money from these funds, was simply named the Memorial Hut. Cyril G. Wates was a well-known climber and Club member to the time of his death in 1946. Among other climbing accomplishments, Wates participated in the first ascent of Mt. Geikie, the highest mountain in the Ramparts. Wates was active in the administration of the Club and a driving force behind the construction of the original Memorial Hut, and served as Club President from 1938 to 1940. The second hut in the area, the Wates-Memorial Hut, was a fitting tribute to a true lover of the Rampart area and a man for whom “the mountains weaved a thread of worship…a thread of peace.” Upon the building of the third hut in the area, the name of Rex Gibson was added to its title. Gibson was the president of the Club from 1955 to 1957, when he died in a climbing accident after being elected to a second term. Gibson also had a strong affinity for the Tonquin Valley and the Ramparts in particular, where he did much of his earlier climbing with Cyril Wates."

- According to the Alpine Club of Canada website: "The rock climbing at Mazinaw Lake is some of the finest in Ontario. The area boasts quartzite cliffs up to 100m high that rise vertically out of the lake. The routes are all traditional and range in grades from 5.0 to 5.11, with the most popular routes in the 5.4 to 5.9 range. The exposure and length of the routes make for an adventure unlike any other in the province. The Bon Echo Hut on the lake is operated by the Toronto Section which also operates a boat to ferry climbers to and from the climbs. The hut is comfortable and an excellent place to meet other climbers and get information on the climbs. The area also offers excellent swimming and hiking. The hut is a single-room wooden structure with a fireplace and kitchen equipped with propane stoves and a large dining table. There is a sauna located near the lake. The hut is not used for sleeping, but is a day hut and cook shelter for those staying at the campsites immediately adjacent to the hut. Bon Echo is located approximately 300 km north east of Toronto on the east side of Mazinaw Lake, a mile north of the Mazinaw Rock and Bon Echo Provincial Park. The drive to the public dock takes three to four hours from Toronto or one and a half hours from Ottawa. The hut can be reached by hiking overland, but this would take an entire day. Boating to the hut is much more convenient."

- According to the Alpine Club of Canada's website, "the Neil Colgan Hut is the highest permanent, habitable structure in Canada", and it is located in the Valley of the Ten Peaks. The hut sits at 9,700 ft, and is within distance of Mounts Little, Bowlen, Fay and Quadra. The hut accommodates 18 people and includes propane stoves and lanterns. According to the Alpine Club of Canada's Backcountry Huts: Neil Colgan Hut: Info Sheet: "Second to the scene of Lake Louise set against the backdrop of Mt. Victoria, Moraine Lake is perhaps the most photographed and best known mountain scene in the Canadian Rockies. The area behind the first row of peaks which can be seen from the lake provides excellent alpine climbing on snow and ice routes, and makes an ideal location for a high altitude climbing hut. The area saw its first hut in 1964 when the Calgary Mountain Club erected a hut at the top of the couloir between peaks 3 and 3 ½. This original hut was named for Graham Cooper, who died while descending after the construction of the hut. The hut was in a poor position, however, because it encouraged use of the couloir as an access route to the hut. By the late 1980s the couloir had seen many rockfall accidents and several fatalities. The hut was dismantled and replaced by the Neil Colgan Hut in 1983. Neil Colgan was a warden in Banff National Park when he died from injuries sustained in a horse accident in the backcountry. The hut was largely funded by his family in his name."

- According to the Alpine Club of Canada's website, the Mount Colin Centennial Hut is located in Jasper National Park at the base of the Southwest Face of Mount Colin. Located close by are Mounts Colin and CR6. The ACC states: "With a thorough renovation in the summer of 1999, the Colin Hut is a clean and efficient shelter which sleeps 6 comfortably in summer. Equipped with Coleman stoves and lanterns as well as a well stocked cooking area, this hut is similar in design to the Castle Mountain Hut."
