- Willoughby John Astley, 1859-1948, came to Banff in 1888 and built the Beach House Hotel at Lake Minnewanka. He moved to Lake Louise in 1889. Brother, Charles D'Oyley Astley, 1849-1937, and Lucy Ann Astley continued to operate the hotel until 1907 when they retired to Banff. The hotel was destroyed as part of power development at Lake Minnewanka, ca.1912.

Fonds includes correspondence between Willoughby Astley and J. A. Jaffary of the Provincial Library, Alberta, 1928-1929, re place names in the Lake Louise area; scrapbook of clippings re World War I, including a list of Banff men who enlisted; Beach House Hotel guest register, 1890-1906, recording name and residence of guest, and occasionally record of fish caught; Astley family photographs, ca.1886-1930s. Photographs pertain to fishing and boating on Lake Minnewanka; Beach House Hotel and Lady of the Lake steam launch; Devil's Canyon, Bankhead and Banff; views of avalanche clearing in Roger's Pass by Byron Harmon. - Bill de Haan, b.1903, was a hotel worker, labourer and government worker at Banff, Alberta, Canada. De Haan came to Banff in 1944 after working across Canada. From ca.1950 to ca.1968, he worked for Banff National Park at Tunnel Mountain campground, the east park gate and the warden service equipment building. After 1968, de Haan was a volunteer at the government fish hatchery in Banff. An avid photographer, de Haan was a member of the Bow Valley Camera Club. He photographed wildflowers and warden cabins throughout the park.

Sauders report of snow survey in the vicinity of Lake Louise . . . June 14, 1918." Also includes posters and calendar pertaining to Banff National Park and Banff Indian Days. Photographs pertain mainly to cabins, including warden cabins, Banff National Park, 1963-1966; also Brett family, early Banff and area, Bankhead, Canmore cemetery (1975); flooding along Bow River, 1972; and construction of archives and library building, 1967-1968, (now Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies).

Visual material includes black and white lantern slides and black and white prints depicting various scenes pertaining to travelling on the Canadian Pacific Railway and depict dining rooms, scnes involving trains and mountains, farming scenes and fields, people in train cars, various cities and towns, figures in natural landscapes, horses and horseback riding, mountains, waterfalls, skiing, ships, CP hotels, and other grand buildings [across Canada] such as Notre Dame Cathedral in Montreal. Textual material includes paper reports [some compiled by Canadian Pacific Hotels Architectural Engineer Ed Steel] detailing various construction and/or renovation projects for hotels, lodges, tea houses, bugalow camps, huts, and backcountry lodges throughout the Canadian Rockies as well as records pertaining to CP hotels in the Canadian Rockies, and the screenplay for "Canadian Pacific."

- Slides were stored in rectangular wood box with leather handle on top, and metal handle at one end. White label that says “Lyon & Turnbull 432 04 February 2009” on lid of the box. Old, peeling, and stained label on top under handle, illegible. Faded, peeling labels on front, some words legible: “from the Canadian Pacific…” 2 stained and water damaged labels detached from box appear to be English shipping labels.“10” stamped in black on both ends of box. Stamped in black on rear of box: “Canadian Pacific Rly Co. 62 to 65 Charing Cross, London, S.W. 1. “3” engraved on upper rim of box. Box is divided into 3 sections with removable wood separators, small pieces of felt line 2 sections of the box.

- Marjorie Helen Folger Dean (b.1902 in Fargo, North Dakota, d.1974) and her family lived at Laggan, Lake Louise ca.1906-1918. Her father, William Dean (1878-1974) was a locomotive engineer with the C.P.R., 1911-1922. Her mother, Sarah Elizabeth Folger Dean, was born in 1883 in Delhi, Ontario and died in 1963. Marjorie Dean married Hargreaves Greenhough on August 6, 1925 in Edmonton, Alberta.

- Parks Canada administers national parks in Canada. The agency has been administered by several government departments and undergone numerous name changes over the years. Most recently it was known as the Canadian Parks Service. Parks Canada is responsible for the administration of mountain parks and, in some cases, townsites within these parks. Until 1990, it administered the town of Banff in Banff National Park. Parks Canada provides a variety of services to visitors and residents pertaining to interpretive and visitor information; trail, resource and wildlife management; fire protection, mountaineering search and rescue and avalanche control; facilities and utilities; townsite services etc.

- Ronald Leslie Duke, 1912-1978, was a professional photographer at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Born in Calgary, Alberta, Duke was educated at Calgary, Banff and the University of Washington in Seattle, USA. After wartime service with the National Film Board of Canada, Ron Duke returned to Banff, where he worked in the photography business for the next thirty years. Here he formed a link in a business lineage of photographers, including George Noble, and was for a time an employee of Noble's corporate successors. After 1958, Duke worked closely with the Banff School of Fine Arts, photographing productions and providing documentary services. After sustaining considerable damage in a fire which destroyed Banff's Mount Royal Hotel in 1967, Ron Duke's business resumed and, in partnership with George Baracos, continued until retirement in 1975.

- Sam Ward, 1884-1973, was a builder and finishing carpenter at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Ward and Louisa Maud "Cis" Ward, 1884-1970, came to Banff in 1912. Sam Ward was also known for music hall recitations. He later lived at Victoria, British Columbia

Personal papers of Sam and Cis Ward include correspondence and cards, 1950s-1970s; and note and guest books, 1902-ca.1960s. Professional records are plans for proposed residences for Sam Ward and Sydney R. Vallance and an addition to the Homestead Hotel. - History / Biographical
- Walter S. Painter, 1877-1957, was an architect in Canada and the United States. Painter rose to prominence early in life as a theatre architect and joined the Canadian Pacific Railway as chief architect while still in his twenties. Projects in the Banff, Alberta area included design of the tower and wings of the Banff Springs Hotel, the first concrete addition to the Lake Louise Chalet (Chateau Lake Louise), and the Cave and Basin. other Canadian projects were major CPR stations and hotels from Montreal to the west coast. For a period, Painter was in partnership with Frank Swales. In later years, Painter was involved in American projects, standardization of school buildings in Chile, and the Painter system of pre-fabrication, with particular interests in housing and concrete construction designs. Walter Painter built his home in Banff in 1912 and retired there in 1947. He was married to Estelle (Stella) Painter, 1880-1975. They had two children, Betty Painter (Walker) and Brook Painter.

Personal papers, ca.1930-1956, record Painter's views on economics, philosophy, religion, housing, etc.
