- James Irvine Brewster, 1882-1947, came to Banff with his parents in 1888. While still boys, he and his brother Bill started guiding fishing parties and later formed an outfitting partnership. With silent partners Fred Hussey and Phil Moore, they established Brewster Brothers in 1904. Jim Brewster and Hussey left the business in 1906. In 1909, Jim returned to guide the business. Under his control, it became a major transportation supplier, Brewster Transport Company. Fern Brewster, 1902-1967, daughter of Jim Brewster and Lade Brewster (d.1915), was a sportswoman, businesswoman and homemaker. She was involved in the operation of Sunshine ski area and was a director of Brewster Transportation after her father's death. Fern Brewster's married names were Clarkson and Dooley. Adele (Dell) Brewster (Sibbald), 1896-1983, Jim Brewster's second wife, was also a director of Brewster Transportation.

- Fonds consists of papers and photographs of James Irvine (Jim) Brewster, Fern Brewster, Dell Brewster and the Brewster family.
- I. James Irvine Brewster papers and photographs, before 1948 and ca.1959, consist mainly of professional papers and photographs relating to guiding and outfitting activities, and to Brewster Transport Company records, including Sunshine ski area records. Series includes correspondence, diaries, legal papers, Sunshine Lodge addition papers, Brewster house plans and other material. Correspondence is incoming and outgoing letters between Brewster and Hussey, clients, and associates regarding guiding and outfitting, real estate speculation and personal matters, etc. 1906-1907. Diaries pertain to guiding, hunting and horse trips, 1897-1901, 1904-1906; entries mainly record clients, territory covered and game observations and records. Also includes articles and hand-drawn map by Brewster on hunting, 1903-1906. Includes 54 photographs pertaining to Brewster Transport after Jim Brewster period.
- II. Fern Brewster papers and photographs, before 1967, includes mainly personal papers, correspondence, recipes, press clippings and photographs regarding friends and family, education, Jim Brewster's death and cooking. Correspondents include Carl Rungius, Les Peters, Charlie Beil and Fern Bedaux.
- III. Dell Brewster papers, 1925-1967, pertain mainly to Jim Brewster's death. Dell Brewster photographs pertain to the Sibbald, Grier and McDougall families.
- IV. Brewster family papers and photographs pertain to Jack Walker Brewster, and Brewster family and friends.

- Gray Campbell, b.1912, was a Royal Canadian Mounted Police constable, rancher, writer and publisher at Banff and Cowley, Alberta and Sidney, British Columbia, Canada. Campbell served with the RCMP in Banff and Cowley districts from 1932 until 1939. He ranched in the Porcupine Hills area, ca.1948-1960, at the same time writing magazine articles on a number of subjects, including RCMP history.

- Police papers are primarily reports, statements and news articles concerning a RCMP case involving the murder of four police officers and the deaths of three fugitives near Banff in 1935. They discuss the roles of Campbell, Bill Neish, Tom Wallace and George C. "Scotty" Harrison. Also includes Campbell's RCMP training papers and reports of various cases.
- Manuscripts are primarily short articles on a variety of subjects, including Harry Stallworthy, RCMP history, Christmas and Lord Strathcona's Horse regiment.
- The Hal B. Hammond material includes letters and manuscripts of an ex North West Mounted Police officer, 1884-1889, re RCMP history, Riel Rebellion, Milk River and Fort Carlton; also photographs of N.W.M.P. and Corporal H. - Lawrence (Laurie, Larry) Allison Duncan, 1890-1978, was a photographer, businessman and collector at Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Duncan came to Alberta in 1908 with his parents, Thomas Henry Duncan and Elizabeth Jane (Gill) Duncan, who settled on a ranch at Okotoks. For a time, Laurie Duncan operated a photography business in Calgary, specializing in views of Calgary, Indians, ranching and the Canadian Rockies. He attended Alpine Club of Canada camps in the 1920s, after becoming a member in 1920 with his graduating climb of Mount President, 1919. He was active in professional photography into the 1930s. Duncan was self-taught in mineralogy, painting and photography and was active for over fifty years in the development of mining and petroleum interests in the United States and Canada. Larry Duncan was an avid collector of shells, gems, rocks, fossils and cultural artifacts.

- Bruno Engler, 1915-2001, was a mountain guide, ski instructor, photographer and film maker at Banff and Canmore, Alberta, Canada. Engler arrived from Switzerland in 1939 and initially worked as a mountain guide and ski instructor for the Canadian Pacific Railway, Sunshine ski area and for Deer Lodge at Lake Louise, Alberta. During the Second World War, he served as a mountain warfare instructor for the Canadian Army. Following the war, Engler worked as a free-lance photographer for the National Film Board and others; as coach of the University of Alberta Ski Team; and as a technical advisor, cameraman and actor for numerous movies made in the Banff area. Throughout his career, Engler worked as a still and motion picture photographer, both for the movie industry and for governments at all levels, as well as operating his own business, Alpine Films of Banff, Alberta.

- Edward Feuz Jr., 1884-1981, was a Canadian Pacific Railway mountain guide at Lake Louise, Alberta and Glacier and Golden, British Columbia, Canada. Feuz was the son of one of the first Swiss Guides brought to Canada by the Canadian Pacific Railway. He climbed at Field and Glacier House in 1903 with his father and guided during summers from 1905 to 1912, settling that year in the Edelweiss Village at Golden, British Columbia. Until his retirement in the 1950s, he accompanied the finest climbers and was involved in over seventy first ascents of peaks over 3048 metres.

- Photographs pertain mainly to mountaineering trips and climbs, mainly led by Edward Feuz Jr. in the Rocky and Selkirk Mountains, and includes many first ascents. Many photographs were taken by clients who sent copies to Feuz. Photographs also pertain to clients, associates and friends, Lake Louise Chalet and Chateau Lake Louise, Lake Louise area, Feuz homes at Edelweiss and Golden, and scenic views in the Rocky and Selkirk Mountains. Negatives are largely unidentified. - William O. Field, 1904-1994, of Massachusetts, U.S.A., was a noted geologist with the American Geographical Society and an expert on mountain glaciers of the northern hemisphere. He made trips to the Canadian Rockies with his father, William Osgood Field, during the 1920s even before graduating from Harvard in 1926. William O. Field studied key glaciers in British Columbia and Alberta from 1922 until 1981.

- History / Biographical
- The Galletly family were residents of Canmore and Banff, Alberta, Canada. David Drummond Galletly, 1838-1916, served as caretaker and guide for the Cave and Basin hot springs, 1897-ca.1910. Previously he worked on the construction of the Banff Springs Hotel and operated a hotel in Canmore. At the Cave and Basin, Galletly conducted tours and became known for his Scottish humor. Other family members included wife Ethel, daughters Viva and Ethel (Fulscher), son-in-law Fred Fulscher, and grandchildren Ronald and Adelina Fulcher.

- Textual records consist of David Galletly papers and Galletly family music. David Galletly papers include manuscripts, n.d., 1914; correspondence 1888-1907; and personal papers n.d., 1902 re early life in Canmore and Banff and the Cave and Basin. The manuscripts include scripts of Galletly's cave tours. Family music includes published sheet music and hand-drawn items. Fonds also includes newsclippings and postcards pertaining to the Galletly family, 1939-[ca.1960]; and drawing of exterior of dwelling on Lot 32, Cave and Basin Avenue, 1912, signed by D. D. - Hermann Hagedorn was an American writer who was known for his biographical works, particularly on Theodore Roosevelt, as well as poetry and novels. Late in life, Hagedorn became interested in Moral Rearmament. During a visit to the movement's headquarters on Mackinac Island, Michigan in 1958, he met George McLean (Chief Walking Buffalo of the Stoney Indians), an active proponent and traveller on behalf of Moral Rearmament. Intrigued by McLean's character and philosophy, Hagedorn wrote articles as well as drafts of a biography tentatively titled "A Chief in Two Worlds," but died before the work could be completed.

- Don Harmon, 1917-1997, was a publisher, photographer and businessman at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Harmon operated Byron Harmon Photographs and the Harmony Drug Store after his father's death in 1942. Byron Harmon Photographs was subsequently run by Don Harmon's daughter, Carole Harmon.

- George K. K. (Tommy) Link, 1887-1979, was professor of Plant Pathology at the University of Chicago, Illinois. Link spent many summers between 1928 and 1977 studying the Lake O'Hara region and building trails there, accompanied by his wife, Adeline Link, d.1943. The Links were frequently guided by Jim Boyce.
