History / Biographical: Ruth Oltmann, b.1937, has been a youth hostel operator, lodge and camp cook, tourism industry worker, and writer in the Kananaskis, Canmore and Exshaw, Alberta, Canada areas since 1970. Her writing career began in 1974, when she contributed to a chapter on environmental history as part of "The Mountain Environment and Urban Society, Kananaskis Pilot Study," a project of the University of Calgary's Environmental Sciences Centre at Kananaskis, Alberta. Oltmann continued her research and writing, publishing "The valley of rumours: the Kananaskis" (Seebe, Alberta: Ribbon Creek Publishing, 1979) and "Lizzie Rummel: Baroness of the Canadian Rockies" (Seebe, Alberta: Ribbon Creek Publishing, 1983).

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of research files on Lizzie Rummel (textual) and research interviews by Ruth Oltmann, as part of her research on the Kananaskis Valley; with: Eileen Langille, Chris Bearns, Joanne Goodwin, Gordon and Ida Matthews, Clarence and Jenny Sage, Jack S. History / Biographical: Sydney R. Vallance, 1891-1979, was a lawyer and mountaineer at Calgary and Banff, Alberta, Canada. Vallance began his law career in 1920, establishing a private practice in 1929. He joined the Alpine Club of Canada in 1932 and held executive positions at both the section and national levels, including a term as President from 1947 to 1950. He made over one hundred ascents during his climbing career. Vallance was also a member of the Skyline Trail Hikers of the Canadian Rockies and was an avid amateur photographer

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of personal papers, photographs and sound recordings of Sydney Vallance pertaining mainly to the Canadian Rockies and Vallance's mountaineering career.; Textual records include manuscripts pertaining to personalities of the Canadian Rockies and to slide presentations on the Banff, Lake Louise, Lake O'Hara and Jasper regions; correspondence files arising from Vallance's positions as Vice President and Hut Committee Chairman of the Alpine Club of Canada, 1945-1946, and as member and President of the Lake O'Hara Trails Club, 1958-1962; miscellaneous correspondence on mountaineering, glacier study, expeditions, packers and outfitters, naming of five peaks in the Mt. History / Biographical: Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies is a charitable, non-profit organization based in Banff, Alberta, Canada. In 1958, the Wa-Che-Yo-Cha-Pa Foundation, presently the Peter and Catharine Whyte Foundation which operates the Whyte Museum, was founded and endowed by artists Peter and Catharine Whyte. The foundation acts as an agency for collecting and preserving cultural materials of the Canadian Rockies. In 1968, the foundation's building opened at 111 Bear Street, providing accommodation for a regional archives, gallery and public library. Between 1967 and 1983, the Archives department recorded and summarized interviews with local personalities, as well as recording noteworthy meetings and events.
