Below that is six lines of writing beginning "One Weeks Extremity May Teach Us ....." "Susan Lehman her work done In the ninth year Of Her Age (__ ?) 1799" * Someone numbered the labels as (a) and (b) and the sampler as (c). It is too fragile to change

- Description
- A needlepoint sampler, in many colours, done in cross-stitch on loosely woven ecru linen. The sampler has a double-stitched border with stitched bars between each row of letters (A-Z) beginning with capital letters, followed by numerals from 1 to 10, then lower case letters (a-z), then numerals from 1 to 6, then large capital letters (A-F), and ending with “Serena Matilda Potts 1822.” The piece was originally framed in a simple brown wood frame with a parallel line (wood grain?) texture. The paper backing has “Serena Potts’ work born 1812” handwritten and a “Royal Picture Gallery” (Calgary, Alberta) framer’s sticker.

Written in Mary Schaffer’s hand: “18 S.M. Potts 1832 Calasche”. On back, ribbon is tied in bow. Green fabric stitched on back to cover neck.

- A writing desk that features a curved and inlaid centre portion which folds back to expose four small drawers and open compartments above a pull-out writing/working surface. The desk is supported by two richly carved legs depicting acanthus leaves, terminating in brass casters. It’s flanked by a pair of brass candle holders. Below the working surface are a pair of fielded flamed mahogany doors with brass accents which enclose a storage area. The upper portion features a bookcase with a pair of glazed doors with brass accents. This mahogany secretary features numerous decorative elements including gilt mounts, brass ornamentations, detailed carvings, flamed mahogany panels and an overall exhibition of superior craftsmanship.
