- Description
- A needlepoint sampler, in many colours, done in cross-stitch on loosely woven ecru linen. The sampler has a double-stitched border with stitched bars between each row of letters (A-Z) beginning with capital letters, followed by numerals from 1 to 10, then lower case letters (a-z), then numerals from 1 to 6, then large capital letters (A-F), and ending with “Serena Matilda Potts 1822.” The piece was originally framed in a simple brown wood frame with a parallel line (wood grain?) texture. The paper backing has “Serena Potts’ work born 1812” handwritten and a “Royal Picture Gallery” (Calgary, Alberta) framer’s sticker.

- Needlepoint sampler by Lucy Ann Andrew, aged 11 years, 1873. Mounted in a shadowbox with wooden frame and plexiglass front. The sampler is done in cross-stitch, multi-coloured (brown, dark grey, light grey and blue) on a loosely woven ecru linen. It depicts an alphabetical display of double upper and single lowercase needlepoint work including “Lucy Ann Andrew, her sampler, aged 11 years, August 6, 1873”, located in bottom one-third portion of sampler. There is a stitched hem around three-quarters of what would have been unfinished weft and warp.

The picture is framed with a very simple wood frame painted gold with two screw eyes and a wire at the back for hanging. The back of the picture is marked “--GE & CO. CHROMO --RIN. - A molded frame of a wax compound with a deep relief of a cathedral aisle lined with columns and arches from a floor to a high ceiling. There is a partition and doors at the end of a tall arched wall with a plaque and wreath on a tiled floor in front. The plaque is a yellowed ivory colour with black and brown staining to enhance details. The plaque hangs from a doubled brown twisted cord through small holes molded through each of the top corners. Carved below the relief is “The Grave of the Unknown Warrior in Westminster Abbey Nov 11 1920.” The back is stamped “Ivorex copyright in all countries Arthur Osborne, made in England.”
