- Abstract
- At the age of 18, Chad Sayers chooses to pursue a perilous existence in the world of professional freeskiing. Immediately successful, he rides high on a train of celebrity, sponsorship, travel, and freedom. But "living the dream" is, in reality, a tiring treadmill of daily risk that eventually sets him adrift from family, friends, lovers -- even himself. As injuries and emotional traumas pile up, his identity fractures into a hall of mirrors -- the flickering images of athlete, son, brother, traveller, and seeker veiling the reality of a man running blindly from heartbreak and physical debilitation. Then one day, in the mountains of France, hanging by a finger above certain death, he sees the one reflection that finally scares him straight: a man who doesn't care. To heal this severed connection to reality and the constant pain he lives with, Sayers quits skiing and turns to his other passions of travel, surfing, and photography. In Overexposure, some of the world's greatest outdoor photographers contribute to this engaging story in order to parse not only the high-stakes gambits required for a pro skier to stay in the spotlight, but also the grandeur of the stage on which these play out. The international roster of renowned photographers included in this stunning work are: Oskar Enander, Mattias Fredriksson, Jordan Manley, Paul Morrison, Steve Ogle, Daniel Ronnback, Chad Sayers, Jason Thompson, Eric Berger, David Carlier, Guy Fattal, Garrett Grove, Guillaume Le Guillou, Bruno Long, Kari Medig, Bruce Rowles, Ben Thouard, and Don Weixl. -- Provided by publisher

- Abstract
- Senescence is a meditation on nature and its seasons. The text is a personal account of a year spent in the Bow Valley, Alberta. In the summer; Alhomsi compares a leaf miner's work to the work of echatologists; in the fall, he studies in the relation between texts, land, and bodies; in the winter, he stalks a muskrat and talks to marmots; in spring, he observes a month's metamorphosis and reflects on love. Between fire & a flood, Alhomsi paints a refreshing image of what is means to live. -- From Backcover

- Abstract
- A spirited 1950s travelogue that takes the reader around the world during a time when two independent young women travelling alone was considered almost revolutionary. Renate Belczyk was born in Dresden, Germany, in 1932. When she was three years old her family moved to Berlin, where they settled into a small apartment building on the outskirts of the city. It was in this building that she met another adventurous girl, Sigrid, with whom she would travel around the world as young women after the Second World War. Having spent most of their childhood and teenage years climbing trees, swimming, cycling, hiking, and adventuring around Germany the two young women attended a talk by the German writer Heinrich Böll. During his presentation the renowned author suggested to the crowd that they all travel to different countries and make friends with the locals whenever they could, as this would help prevent another war. Renate and Sigrid took this advice to heart, and from that point their adventures together took flight. Starting in 1955 and travelling for three years to England, France, Spain, Portugal, Mexico, Canada, Japan, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Egypt, Turkey, Macedonia, and Greece, their adventures together culminated with their joint return to Germany in 1958. In 1959 Renate returned to the Canadian Rockies to work in the backcountry, and in 1960 she married mountaineer Felix Belczyk and settled in Castlegar, BC, where they raised three children. Our Trip Around the World is an endearing snapshot of the postwar era when adventure travel – mountaineering, hiking, hitchhiking, and cycling – was enticing those with adventurous spirits to experience the world like never before.
