History / Biographical: Bill de Haan, b.1903, was a hotel worker, labourer and government worker at Banff, Alberta, Canada. De Haan came to Banff in 1944 after working across Canada. From ca.1950 to ca.1968, he worked for Banff National Park at Tunnel Mountain campground, the east park gate and the warden service equipment building. After 1968, de Haan was a volunteer at the government fish hatchery in Banff. An avid photographer, de Haan was a member of the Bow Valley Camera Club. He photographed wildflowers and warden cabins throughout the park.

Scope & Content: Fonds includes textual material in the form of a manuscript, ephemera and photographs made by and collected by Bill de Haan. The manuscript is titled "Photographs to accompany P. M. Sauders report of snow survey in the vicinity of Lake Louise . . . June 14, 1918." Also includes posters and calendar pertaining to Banff National Park and Banff Indian Days. History / Biographical: Mary Thomson Allan, 1913-1989, was a poet and homemaker at Banff and Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Mary Thomson was born in Banff, where her mother, Jeannie Thomson, ran the Cave and Basin Teahouse. In the 1980s Allan was involved in the Save the Cave and Basin Committee. Allan wrote poetry starting in the 1930s. A number of her poems were published in periodicals and anthologies during the 1950s to 1970s, and a selection, titled "The Inward Trail", was published posthumously in 1992. "Banff Collections and Recollections" was in process when Allan died and editing was continued by her daughter, Jannis Hare.

History / Biographical: Willoughby John Astley, 1859-1948, came to Banff in 1888 and built the Beach House Hotel at Lake Minnewanka. He moved to Lake Louise in 1889. Brother, Charles D'Oyley Astley, 1849-1937, and Lucy Ann Astley continued to operate the hotel until 1907 when they retired to Banff. The hotel was destroyed as part of power development at Lake Minnewanka, ca.1912.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of notes, correspondence and articles pertaining to the Astley family and early history of Lake Louise and Lake Minnewanka areas. History / Biographical: Ronald Leslie Duke, 1912-1978, was a professional photographer at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Born in Calgary, Alberta, Duke was educated at Calgary, Banff and the University of Washington in Seattle, USA. After wartime service with the National Film Board of Canada, Ron Duke returned to Banff, where he worked in the photography business for the next thirty years. Here he formed a link in a business lineage of photographers, including George Noble, and was for a time an employee of Noble's corporate successors. After 1958, Duke worked closely with the Banff School of Fine Arts, photographing productions and providing documentary services. After sustaining considerable damage in a fire which destroyed Banff's Mount Royal Hotel in 1967, Ron Duke's business resumed and, in partnership with George Baracos, continued until retirement in 1975.

History / Biographical: Walter S. Painter, 1877-1957, was an architect in Canada and the United States. Painter rose to prominence early in life as a theatre architect and joined the Canadian Pacific Railway as chief architect while still in his twenties. Projects in the Banff, Alberta area included design of the tower and wings of the Banff Springs Hotel, the first concrete addition to the Lake Louise Chalet (Chateau Lake Louise), and the Cave and Basin. other Canadian projects were major CPR stations and hotels from Montreal to the west coast. For a period, Painter was in partnership with Frank Swales. In later years, Painter was involved in American projects, standardization of school buildings in Chile, and the Painter system of pre-fabrication, with particular interests in housing and concrete construction designs. Walter Painter built his home in Banff in 1912 and retired there in 1947. He was married to Estelle (Stella) Painter, 1880-1975. They had two children, Betty Painter (Walker) and Brook Painter.
