History / Biographical
John D. (Jack) Anderson, 1917-1964, was a businessman at Banff, Alberta, Canada. He was born and raised in Banff and in 1940 entered business with his father, J. D. Anderson Sr., in the J. D. Anderson Store and, in 1941, in the British Woollen Shop. By 1951, Jack Anderson controlled both businesses. Anderson was an avid photographer and an early advocate of natural colour photography. In 1945, this interest brought Jack Anderson into partnership with Bill Gibbons in the Banff-based British Photographic Laboratories of Canada. Anderson was active in numerous community organizations, including the Banff Kinsmen Club, Banff Rotary Club, the Junior and Banff Chambers of Commerce, Banff Indian Days and Banff Ski Runners and helped organize several Canadian and international ski championships. Anderson and his wife, Annabel, raised their family in Banff.

History / Biographical
Forrest Oliver "Pat" Brewster, 1896-1982, was a trail guide, outfitter and businessman in Banff, Alberta, Canada. Pat was a native and life-long resident of Banff. As a boy, he was an active Boy Scout and, by age seventeen, was a big game guide. After serving in World War I, Brewster established the first permanent camp at Lake O'Hara for the Canadian Pacific Railway. In 1926, he took over the Brewster Transport Company outfitting business from his brothers, Bill and Jim. In the 1930s, he became involved in skiing explorations in the Assiniboine, Skoki and Sunshine areas. Pat Brewster was active in community affairs and, in his later years, was an avid historian of the region. He published three books of reminiscences between 1975 and 1982.

History / Biographical
Jim Davies, heliocopter pilot and artist, lives at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Davies was a pioneer in the development and execution of mountain rescue techniques particular to the needs of the mountain parks. With alpine specialist Peter Fuhrmann of Canadian National Parks, he developed the helicopter sling rescue technique. Intermountain Helicopters was established in 1972 by James M. Davies in order to purchase a Bell 206B helicopter for use in the mountains. Davies operated out of Banff under the charter of Bow Helicopters and when Okanagan Helicopters Ltd. purchased Bow Helicopters Ltd. in 1977?, it bought out Davies as well. Davies continued to fly as their employee until 1991, when he retired to pursue a career as an artist.

History / Biographical
Walter Ashdown, 1890-1975, was a chauffeur at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Ashdown emigrated to Canada in 1904 and farmed for several years before becoming a private chauffeur, ca.1913, to prominent Calgarians prior to the First World War. He served as a dispatch rider and driver in France, returning to Canada in 1919. The following year he commenced employment with Brewster Transport Co., retiring ca.1970. During his long career, Ashdown was Brewster's chauffeur to celebrities, including royalty, politicians and actors. His 1930 drive of 81 miles in 82 minutes to deliver life-saving equipment to the Monarch Mine near Field, B.C. was widely publicized. In 1970, Ashdown received an award for one million accident-free miles.

The Banff Community Society was a liaison group representing town of Banff to the Government of Canada. Over the years, various groups have represented the interests of Banff residents and businesses in the absence of municipal government. These have included the Banff Board of Trade, 1912-1915, the Banff Citizen's Association, 1921 (became the Banff Advisory Council in 1925). The latter served until 1978, when the Banff Advisory Society (later the Banff Community Society) was organized. In 1983 the Banff Community Society's responsibilities were assumed by the Banff School Board.

History / Biographical
Brewster Transport Company is a transportation company based at Banff, Alberta. Formally organized in 1900 as W. & J. Brewster, Guides and Packers, the company expanded in 1904 into commercial development in Banff and acquired the Canadian Pacific Railway livery concession at Banff in 1905. From 1909 until his death in 1947, Jim Brewster guided the company, with Lou Crosby handling finance. Beginning in 1917, Brewster Transport entered the motorized era with touring cars, later replaced with a succession of buses. From 1920 to 1933, Bill Brewster was general manager and during this period the company acquired Royal Hawaiian Transport and the Sunshine Ski development. The company amalgamated its transportation interests with Rocky Mountain Tours in 1957, and in 1965 the company passed out of the Brewster family's hands, being sold to Greyhound Lines of Canada. Brewster Transport continues to operate as Brewster Transportation and Tours, a diversified transportation and accommodation company in the Rocky Mountains.
