History / Biographical: Allan E. Crawford (1900-1989) of Calgary, Alberta and Prince Rupert, British Columbia, was a member of the Sky Line Trail Hikers from 1937 to 1946 and was the "Official Musician of the Sky Line Trail Hikers" in 1937, 1938, 1940, and 1941. He also participated in Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies trips from 1937, 1938, 1940, 1941 as their musician. Allan E. Crawford appeared on Calgary radio station CFCN "The Voice of the Prairies" on a live weekly program, with the music trio "The Gamboliers" playing the accordian with Eddie Clemens on guitar and J.E. Gerke on vocals. Allan also played the organ, piano and harmonica.

History / Biographical: Brewster Transport Company is a transportation company based at Banff, Alberta. Formally organized in 1900 as W. & J. Brewster, Guides and Packers, the company expanded in 1904 into commercial development in Banff and acquired the Canadian Pacific Railway livery concession at Banff in 1905. From 1909 until his death in 1947, Jim Brewster guided the company, with Lou Crosby handling finance. Beginning in 1917, Brewster Transport entered the motorized era with touring cars, later replaced with a succession of buses. From 1920 to 1933, Bill Brewster was general manager and during this period the company acquired Royal Hawaiian Transport and the Sunshine Ski development. The company amalgamated its transportation interests with Rocky Mountain Tours in 1957, and in 1965 the company passed out of the Brewster family's hands, being sold to Greyhound Lines of Canada. Brewster Transport continues to operate as Brewster Transportation and Tours, a diversified transportation and accommodation company in the Rocky Mountains.

History / Biographical: Clifford White (I), 1902-1964, skier, mountaineer and photographer was the son of Dave and Annie White, and the brother of Peter Whyte. He spent his life in the Banff area and was a pioneer in ski development in the Banff and Lake Louise areas. In 1932, he and Russell H. Bennett, J.A. Weiss and A.L. Withers skied a 300 mile route from Jasper to Lake Louise in a 20 day period. Cliff White made numerous pioneering ski expeditions including trips to Skoki, the Columbia Icefields and the Coast Range of British Columbia in 1934. Clifford was an active participant in the construction of Skoki Lodge and Mount Temple Chalet, managing Mount Temple from 1939-1945. He also participated in the development of skiing at Mount Norquay. Following World War I, Clifford helped organize the first Banff Ski Club, 1926. Cliff White married Mildred Jackson, d.1953 and they had three children - Clifford Jr., Donald, and Peter.

History / Biographical: The Crosby family of Banff and Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada was involved with the development and operation of businesses at Lake Louise from 1923, when Louis S. and Gertrude Crosby built the Lake Louise Trading Company, a general store and dining room. Over the years they acquired Deer Lodge (1924); Triangle Inn, the YWCA and Inglenook Lodge (1941); and operated a gas station (1926). Deer Lodge was expanded in 1925, 1931, 1939, 1941 and staff quarters were added. Gertrude Crosby managed the businesses, while Lou Crosby was involved with Brewster Transport Company from 1907 to 1964. From 1947 until his death in 1964, Crosby was President of Brewster's and prior to that had handled the financial operations for the firm. The Crosby family was actively involved with the Banff Winter Carnival.

History / Biographical: Ernst Niederer, 1891-1978, was an alpine ski and climbing guide at Jasper, Banff, Columbia Icefield and Lake Louise, Alberta. Niederer was born in Teufen, Switzerland and came to Canada in 1920. He began guiding in 1928 and was certified in 1940. He retired to Victoria in 1951, but continued to ski and teach. Niederer was survived by his wife Ivy and son Ernie.

Scope & Content: Fonds consists of photographs, 1913-1956 pertaining to climbing, guiding, backcountry skiing, and film-making of "Emperor Waltz", filmed in Jasper. Also included are personal photographs, 1935-1950. Photograph album pertains to farming, 1935 and includes ca.25 postcards re Jasper area and Europe, ca.1940 - ca.1950. History / Biographical: Glenn Tooke, 1930-1996, moved to Banff, Alberta from Edmonton with his wife Shirley in 1961. Glenn managed Banff Camera, Rundle Photo and Cascade Studio and in 1964, he and Shirley purchased the Banff A&W. In 1969, they opened and operated the restaurant Joshua's, in partnership with Werner Peschl and in 1970, they opened an art gallery that showcased Alberta artists and offered custom framing. During this time, Glenn and Rob Lefroy rented the Banff Avenue Auditorium (presently Parks Canada Information Centre) and held public dances with live bands on the weekends. In 1979, Shirley and Bob Kinzie established a professional theatre company called Any Space Theatre. With contract actors, musicians and playwrights, they presented their plays in many locations within Banff, Lake Louise, Calgary, and Edmonton. Glenn assisted in designing and building the sets, and provided all the photography for promoting the productions. Having divided their time between Banff and Calgary during the 1970s and early 1980s, Glenn and Shirley permanently settled in Banff in 1984 and re-established their gallery. In 1986, they opened Jump Start, a specialty coffee shop. Shirley and Glenn have two children, Robert and Tamara.

History / Biographical: Hans Gmoser, 1932-2006 was born in Braunau, Austria in 1932. During his long career he worked as a mountain guide, mountaineer, ski instructor, skier, cinematographer, lecturer, and founder and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Canadian Mountain Holidays. Hans Gmoser was also an active cyclist and was based in Banff and Harvie Heights, Alberta.; Gmoser gained early skiing and mountaineering experience in post-war Austria before emigrating to Canada with his friend Leo Grillmair in 1951. Lizzie Rummel gave him his first job in the mountains at Mount Assiniboine. By 1953 he was working as a mountain guide and founded Rocky Mountain Guides Ltd. (Canadian Mountain Holidays CMH) in 1957. That year he began filming promotional films containing climbing and skiing adventure sequences. He first used fixed-wing aircraft and later helicopters, starting in 1963, to transport clients for spring skiing and summer climbing. Gmoser toured throughout North America promoting his skiing and climbing films, attracting large audiences with his inspiring lectures.; Gmoser built Bugaboo Lodge in 1968, the first of six lodges which also include Bobbie Burns, Galena, Gothics, Adamants and Cariboo lodges, to serve international heli-skiers and heli-hikers. Gmoser retired from Canadian Mountain Holidays in 1993. Hans Gmoser received honourary memberships in the Alpine Club of Canada and the International Federation of Mountain Guides Associations. He was elected to the Honour Roll of Canadian Skiing and the U.S. National Ski Hall of Fame and received the Banff Mountain Film Festival Summit of Excellence Award. In 1987 Hans Gmoser was awarded the Order of Canada.
