Lid fits almost entirely over depth of box and is shaped into rounded scallop shape on either side, to leave opening for two circular brass pulls /handles on either side of box itself. With exception of brass handles, box entirely black lacquer. Lacquer has minor chips along base of box and along lid edging.

The lining bottom pops out because it has become unglued and when lining removed from box there is a vacant space between its lowest point and the box base - used possibly as a secret storage compartment. Box base is laminated and glued to oval body of box, illegible scratching on brass.
