- Description
- A metal hand compass (a) in a brown leather case (b) into which the compass fits perfectly. The case has “MADE IN GERMANY” stamped in ink on the inside. The compass is two-sided; one side is calibrated for a directional compass and one side is for measuring inches to miles and nautical miles (on maps). The compass is suspended on a central pivot with a metal ring on the top. The compass has a round face covered by hard clear plastic; the body of the compass is metal. The bottom of the compass is elongated with a point at the end where a small wheel is riveted onto the body. This compass wheel is used for measuring distances (land miles or nautical miles) on maps. On the directional side of the compass face the background is white and the letters and numbers are blue. The magnetic compass needle is half silver, half blue. The face dial is calibrated in degrees starting with 0, every 10 degrees marked to 330, completing the 360 degrees; N, E, S, and W and the lines marking them from the centre are in bold face blue N/E, S/E, S/W and N/W are in blue but smaller lettering. On the opposite side of the compass the outer ring is blue and the inner ring is orange, the background is white with the degrees in black; the needle is black also. The outer “inches to miles” compass has 39 on the top and every fifth degree is calibrated to 3, then 6, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36 where it comes full circle to the top at 39. The inner “Nautical Miles” starts with 0 at the top and every 10th degree is marked in succession by 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, until it comes full circle to 0. The word “GERMANY” is printed at the bottom of the compass.
