History / Biographical: Herbert Alonzo "Soapy" Smith, 1878-1948, was a rancher, guide and outfitter at Jumping Pound, Banff, and Seebe, Alberta, Canada. Smith came to Canada in 1904 and worked on ranches in the Jumping Pound district. In 1906 he began working for Brewster Brothers as a cook and guided for them until ca.1920. During the winters, he raised and boarded horses, returning to Banff each outfitting season. In about 1923, Smith started a new ranch, the present day Rafter 6 near Seebe, from which he outfitted and guided. In later years, he frequently outfitted for the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies.
