- Abstract
- Canada's Legal Pasts presents new essays on a range of topics and episodes in Canadian legal history, provides an introduction to legal methodologies, shows researchers new to the field how to locate and use a variety of sources, and includes a combined bibliography arranged to demonstrate best practices in gathering and listing primary sources. It is an essential welcome for scholars who wish to learn about Canada's legal pasts--and why we study them. Telling new stories--about a fishing vessel that became the subject of an extraordinarily long diplomatic dispute, young Northwest Mounted Police constables subject to an odd mixture of police discipline and criminal procedure, and more--this book presents the vibrant evolution of Canada's legal tradition. Explorations of primary sources, including provincial archive records that suggest how Quebec courts have been used in interfamilial conflict, newspaper records that disclose the details of bigamy cases, and penitentiary records that reveal the details of the lives and legal entanglements of Canada's most marginalized people, show the many different ways of researching and understanding legal history. This is Canadian legal history as you've never seen it before. Canada's Legal Pasts dives into new topics in Canada's fascinating history and presents practical approaches to legal scholarship, bringing together established and emerging scholars in collection essential for researchers at all levels. -- Provided by publisher.

- Abstract
- In August 2016, a group of about 40 residents as well as a couple of county councillors met at the Eagle Valley Community Hall to discuss the process of creating a new area structure plan under the oversight of a steering committee. The result of that meeting was a consensus to create a working group to provide the county with input as well as to help officials “understand who we are as a community, the commitment that we have to the land we live on, and our heritage, cultural and social resources that are in the community,”.Five volunteers — Anne Macklin, Lynne Henry, Douglas McCullough, Bill Souster and Greif — formed the Eagle Valley Working Group, which is not affiliated with any recognized societies already in the region. Over the following six months, a questionnaire was formulated to glean information from the community’s residents. A summary of the survey’s results was then discussed during a meeting held at the Sundre Petroleum Operators Group’s office this past January. When the process started, a number of important stakeholders in terms of working relationships were identified, such as the oil and gas industry, social services including Greenwood Neighbourhood Place as well as the Town of Sundre. So following January’s meeting, the working group was tasked with preparing the legacy document. Included within its pages is information about Eagle Valley’s climate, oil and gas sector, geology, as well as infrastructure issues such as roads, wastewater, water, parks and recreation. A copy of the book, is available for sale at the Sundre Municipal Library. (Summarized from Mountainview Today article - website)

- Abstract
- "Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) (Heritage Conservation Studies, Architecture and Engineering Services) was requested by Claire Sieber (Cultural Resource Management Advisor for Parks Canada's Mount Revelstoke and Glacier Field Unit) to provide recording services of eastbound and westbound viewscapes in Glacier National Park, including Rogers Pass National Historic Site (RPNHS) in British Columbia. This request stems from an analysis made by the Mount Revelstoke and Glacier Field Unit in conjunction with Parks Canada's Indigenous Affairs and Cultural Heritage Directorate to identify the values of this cultural landscape and its character-defining elements and subsequently document them. This is a mitigation measure assocated with constriction on the Trans-Canada Highway (TCH)." - Project Description

- Abstract
- Recipes as Reciprocity considers the ways that food and research intersect for both researchers, participants, and communities demonstrating how everyday acts around food preparation, consumption, and sharing can enable unexpected approaches to reciprocal research and fuel relationships across cultures, generations, spaces, and places. Drawing from research contexts within Canada, Cuba, India, Malawi, Nepal, Paraguay, and Japan, contributors use the sharing of food knowledge and food processes (such as drying, steaming, mixing, grinding, and churning) to examine topics like identity, community-based research ethics, food sovereignty, and nutrition. Each chapter highlights practical and experiential elements of fieldwork, incorporating storytelling, recipes, and methodological practices to offer insight into how food facilitates relationship-building and knowledge-sharing across geographical and cultural boarders. Contributors to this volume bring a range of disciplinary backgrounds--including anthropology, public health, social work, history, and rural studies--to the exploration of global and Indigenous foodways, perceptions around ethical eating and authenticity, language and food preparation, perspectives on healthy eating, and what it means to develop research relationships through food. Challenging colonial, heteropatriarchal, and methodological divisions between academic and less formal ways of knowing, Recipes as Reciprocity draws critical attention to the ways food can bridge disciplinary and lived experiences, propelling meaningful research and reciprocal relationships.-- Provided by publisher.

- Abstract
- Leading scholars in animal history confront key questions of how we can know and understand the more-than-human past, showcasing the innovative methods historians use to discover and explain how animals fit into our collective histories. Understanding the relationships between humans and animals is essential to a full understanding of both our present and our shared past. Across the humanities and social sciences, researchers have embraced the 'animal turn,' a multispecies approach to scholarship, with historians at the forefront of new research in human-animal studies that blends traditional research methods with interdisciplinary theoretical frameworks that decenter humans in historical narratives. These exciting approaches come with core methodological challenges for scholars seeking to better understand the past from non-anthropocentric perspectives. Whether in a large public archive, a small private collection, or the oral histories of living memories, stories of animals are mediated by the humans who have inscribed the records and organized archival collections. In oral histories, the place of animals in the past are further refracted by the frailty of human memory and recollection. Only traces remain for researchers to read and interpret. Bringing together seventeen original essays by a leading group of international scholars, Traces of the Animal Past showcases the innovative methods historians use to unearth and explain how animals fit into our collective histories. Situating the historian within the narrative, bringing transparency to methodological processes, and reflecting on the processes and procedures of current research, this book presents new approaches and new directions for a maturing field of historical inquiry.-- Provided by publisher.
