Description
A violin and bow in black wood case. (a) violin, golden brown varnished classic violin in hourglass shape, black fingerboard, pegs and tailpiece. Four strings with tuning screw on E string. Middle of back has inscribed a latticed scroll design. Top of back is inscribed "Ole Bull", and the same on the inside of the violin, purfled edges. Note: varnish flaking and worn off in spots, wood stained, two long cracks on the soundboard behind the f-holes, edges battered.( b) bow, standard violin bow with white horsehair and 8.5 cm length of cord wrapping just above the frog. Frog inlaid with nacre. Note: nacre strip on frog cracked. (c) bridge, light coloured wood with legs shaped to follow curve of violin, on side of curved top higher than the other. (d) case, black painted wood lined with red purple velvet. Shaped wider at one end, and narrower at the other to follow the shape of the violin, straight sides, with a bulge in the top allowing for extra height of fingerboards and bridge. Closes with small brass hook and eye at each end of one side (one hook missing), with brass wire handle between. Newer, stainless steel latch has been added next to missing hook and eye. Inside fully lined with red purple velvet, with semi circular blocks fitted in on sides to fit the hourglass shape of the violin around and hold securely. Three velvet loops across top at wide end to hold bow. Note: traction crackle all over painted case, paint chipping, edges nicked, velvet pulling away from wood and falling down in spots on sides.
