A small narrow sword with wooden scabbard and handle shaped like angular dragon's head. (a) sword, small with thin, narrow, sharply pointed blade, of one piece with handle which is shaped like angular dragon head on long neck. Blade is inlaid with strips of bronze on each side and along spine with incised geometric designs, and a double notch cut into spine on each side near the middle. Handle is overlaid with bronze strips into which designs and features of dragon have been cut. (b) scabbard, made of two pieces of wood shaped to fit the blade and held together with five metal strips around the outside, evenly spaced along length, one strap missing. Front side completely carved with intricate geometric design and small slit carved out near top through which is tied a leather thong.

History / Biographical
David McDougall, son of George Millward McDougall and Elizabeth Chantler McDougall, was born on May 14, 1845 in Owen Sound, Ontario. David had four siblings: John, Eliza, Lubby, and Nellie. David married Annie McKenzie in 1871 in Manitoba. Together, they had six children, including their daughter named Georgina (Georgie) Elizabeth McDougall (1872-1965). Georgina was the wife of Norman Luxton and an active member in Banff and the mother of Eleanor Georgina Luxton (1908-1995). David was an early pioneer of Calgary and Banff, who helped build both community life and their economies. While David’s father and brother were both members of the clergy and did missionary work in Morley, Alberta, David become a successful businessman. He established a general merchant store in Morley where he was a dealer in cattle, horses, furs, and curios. In addition to managing his own business block in Calgary, David also owned properties in Edmonton and Calgary. In Banff, David and Annie owned the Mount Royal Hotel for six years until they sold it to Jim Brewster in August 14, 1913. David died in December 6, 1927 and Annie died in 1939.

Series 1 consists of business related correspondence to various companies, individuals, and two branches of the Canadian Government. Government correspondence pertains to taxes and by-laws for McDougall’s properties. Series 2 contains invoices, receipts, cheques, and bank statements pertaining to McDougall’s business and properties. Series 3 contains personal letters and legal documents. Materials includes handwritten letters, property transactions and proof of ownership on properties. Series 4 contains cheque books, Dominion Travellers’ Hotel Guide, event program featuring Commissioner Coombs and “Safety First Guarantee” slip. Series 5 contains blueprints of Mount Royal Hotel and McDougall business block, Calgary 1911. The last series consist of a painting of George Noble photograph of Banff Ave, 1929.

History / Biographical
Gray Campbell, b.1912, was a Royal Canadian Mounted Police constable, rancher, writer and publisher at Banff and Cowley, Alberta and Sidney, British Columbia, Canada. Campbell served with the RCMP in Banff and Cowley districts from 1932 until 1939. He ranched in the Porcupine Hills area, ca.1948-1960, at the same time writing magazine articles on a number of subjects, including RCMP history.
Scope & Content
Fonds consists of manuscripts and research papers, 196-; police papers, 1932-1935; correspondence, 1937-1957; publications, 1933-1942; Hal B. Hammond papers and photographs, 1887-1888, 1938, n.d.; and research and personal photographs, 1887-ca.1937.
Police papers are primarily reports, statements and news articles concerning a RCMP case involving the murder of four police officers and the deaths of three fugitives near Banff in 1935. They discuss the roles of Campbell, Bill Neish, Tom Wallace and George C. "Scotty" Harrison. Also includes Campbell's RCMP training papers and reports of various cases.
Manuscripts are primarily short articles on a variety of subjects, including Harry Stallworthy, RCMP history, Christmas and Lord Strathcona's Horse regiment.
The Hal B. Hammond material includes letters and manuscripts of an ex North West Mounted Police officer, 1884-1889, re RCMP history, Riel Rebellion, Milk River and Fort Carlton; also photographs of N.W.M.P. and Corporal H. B. Hammond, 1887-1888. Other photographs pertain to Harry Stallworthy, Fred Bagley, commercial views of Banff and area, ca.1925, and personal photographs, 1933.

History / Biographical
Ella Maud [Woodworth] Kidney (1894-1977) was born in Banff as the fourth of 11 siblings. Her parents were Benjamin Woodworth and Elizabeth [McIntire] Woodworth. Growing up, Maud worked briefly for the Alberta Hotel and the Bottling Works company in Banff. Maud was married to John A. MacAulay in 1917, and widowed later that year. Her twin sons, John A. [Jack] and Thomas A. [Ted] MacAulay, were born in 1918. Maud married Forest H. "Pop" Kidney (1889-1979) on February 14, 1923, and the new family settled into the Kidney home on Wolf and Muskrat Street. The Kidney residence was originally located in Bankhead, but was moved to Banff and sold following the town's closure in 1922. Maud and Forest operated several local businesses including Banff Grocery, Quaker Coffee Shop, Pop's Bakery and Kidney Kabins. The Kidneys were also active in community affairs throughout their lives. Maud Kidney was a long-time member of the Girls' Sunshine Flower Club in Banff [and the club's president for over a decade spanning across the 1940's], as well as the Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire [I.O.D.E.] and Rebekah Lodge, and she was matron of the Order of the Eastern Star in Banff in 1950. Forest Kidney was involved in the Banff Shriners Club, the Kiwanis Club, the Independent Order of Oddfellows and the Canadian Restaurants Association [CRA], among other groups; in the early 1960's, Forest also served as the President of the Calgary branch of the CRA. Jack and Ted MacAulay grew up together in Banff, where they were involved in Banff's Boy Scouts program and local hockey teams. Jack in particular was an avid hockey player, until an accident in 1940 caused damage to his right eye which kept him from competing. From 1943 to 1945, Jack worked for Boeing Aircraft of Canada Ltd., and in 1946 he was appointed as the Chief Inspector of War Assets for Alberta and the Yukon Territories. Jack married Karin Wallensteen in 1946, and the couple had 6 children together: sons Herb and John, and daughters Karen, Shelley, Jodi and Julie-Ann. Jack served as a coach for the Banff Minor Hockey League for 46 years. Jack also took on several other positions within the Bow Valley community, including working as a volunteer with the Banff Figure Skating Club, a co-founder of the Banff Recreation Board, and a member of the Banff Advisory Council, the Banff Hospital Board and the Banff School Board.

History / Biographical
O. J. Schauerte was born July 24, 1926 at Pincher Creek, Alberta. Education: Grade X and Advanced Forestry Courses (equivalent to 2 years of University at Athabasca College). He had started work with the Banff Warden Service in 1955-56 as Acting Warden with Beef Woodworth and Jim Deegan at Lake Louise and later with Ernie Young. Attended the first Warden Rescue Training School at Cuthead Camp - both summer and winter exercises. Part of his duties included packing and horse patrols. First packing job was to haul deadwood trees to the Beehive Lookout (pictured in 35mm slide of O. J. Schauerte with 'Frank' the packhorse. Acting Warden Wes Gilstorf and O. J. Schauerte were the first to assist in the rescue mission of the tragedy on Mount Temple where seven boys from Philadelphia were killed. On the same day of this tragedy, O. J. and Wes had been on foot patrol in the Wenkchemna Valley, it being a warm day, the two had heard numerous avalanches falling for most of the day. In the Fall of 1956, Chief Herb Ashley dismissed O. J. from his temporary employment and O. J. joined the Alberta Forest Service for his full career until he retired.
