History / Biographical
O. J. Schauerte was born July 24, 1926 at Pincher Creek, Alberta. Education: Grade X and Advanced Forestry Courses (equivalent to 2 years of University at Athabasca College). He had started work with the Banff Warden Service in 1955-56 as Acting Warden with Beef Woodworth and Jim Deegan at Lake Louise and later with Ernie Young. Attended the first Warden Rescue Training School at Cuthead Camp - both summer and winter exercises. Part of his duties included packing and horse patrols. First packing job was to haul deadwood trees to the Beehive Lookout (pictured in 35mm slide of O. J. Schauerte with 'Frank' the packhorse. Acting Warden Wes Gilstorf and O. J. Schauerte were the first to assist in the rescue mission of the tragedy on Mount Temple where seven boys from Philadelphia were killed. On the same day of this tragedy, O. J. and Wes had been on foot patrol in the Wenkchemna Valley, it being a warm day, the two had heard numerous avalanches falling for most of the day. In the Fall of 1956, Chief Herb Ashley dismissed O. J. from his temporary employment and O. J. joined the Alberta Forest Service for his full career until he retired.
