Bodice 15.0 long with silk lacing to tighten. Back opening to waist with drawstring neckline and empire waistline. 24.0 long slit openings at waist both sides. Bodicelined with unbleached cotton. (b,c) ivory satin shoes, 26.0 long. Very pointed toe, narrow leather sole and heel, heel shaped, 2.0 high. (d,e) tiny white unlined leather gloves, 12.5 around palm, 13.0 from centre finger to wrist. Fine stitching with 3 decorative 4.0 long seams on back of hand, wrist closure with a snap. (f) ring cushion, 13.0x9.0x4.0, embossed satin with satin bows on each corner with tiny white shells. Description
A needlepoint sampler, in many colours, done in cross-stitch on loosely woven ecru linen. The sampler has a double-stitched border with stitched bars between each row of letters (A-Z) beginning with capital letters, followed by numerals from 1 to 10, then lower case letters (a-z), then numerals from 1 to 6, then large capital letters (A-F), and ending with “Serena Matilda Potts 1822.” The piece was originally framed in a simple brown wood frame with a parallel line (wood grain?) texture. The paper backing has “Serena Potts’ work born 1812” handwritten and a “Royal Picture Gallery” (Calgary, Alberta) framer’s sticker.
