- Willoughby John Astley, 1859-1948, came to Banff in 1888 and built the Beach House Hotel at Lake Minnewanka. He moved to Lake Louise in 1889. Brother, Charles D'Oyley Astley, 1849-1937, and Lucy Ann Astley continued to operate the hotel until 1907 when they retired to Banff. The hotel was destroyed as part of power development at Lake Minnewanka, ca.1912.

Fonds includes correspondence between Willoughby Astley and J. A. Jaffary of the Provincial Library, Alberta, 1928-1929, re place names in the Lake Louise area; scrapbook of clippings re World War I, including a list of Banff men who enlisted; Beach House Hotel guest register, 1890-1906, recording name and residence of guest, and occasionally record of fish caught; Astley family photographs, ca.1886-1930s. Photographs pertain to fishing and boating on Lake Minnewanka; Beach House Hotel and Lady of the Lake steam launch; Devil's Canyon, Bankhead and Banff; views of avalanche clearing in Roger's Pass by Byron Harmon. - E. O. (Edward Oliver) Wheeler, 1890-1962, was a Canadian surveyor, soldier and mountaineer. Wheeler was born in Ottawa, the son of A. O. (Arthur Oliver) Wheeler, Dominion Land Surveyor and founder of the Alpine Club of Canada. E. O. Wheeler served in the Royal Engineers in World War I and received the Military Cross in 1916 and the Legion of Honour (France). In 1941 he was appointed Surveyor-General of India and in 1943 was knighted by King George VI. During World War II, he served as Director of the Frontier Circle of the Survey of India. Wheeler retired to Lavington, British Columbia in 1947. Throughout his life, Wheeler was involved in world mountaineering. He worked on the mapping of the 1922 expedition of Mount Everest and was active in the Alpine Club of Canada, serving as its President from 1950 to 1954

Diaries pertain to early life in Ontario and Alberta, service as a surveyor in India, service with the Royal Engineers in France and Mesopotamia, 1915-1918, trips on leave from India to Canada, U.S.A., England, South Africa, Asia, south Pacific, and New Zealand. Diaries also detail ACC camp preparations and activities, travel to and from Banff, clubhouse work; travel details, daily activities and accounts of climbs in France and Scotland; trans-Atlantic and trans-Canada voyage; Alpine Club of Canada Vermilion Camp activities; Strathcona, Vancouver Island reconnaissance trip and climbs; travels to California, Hawaii and Japan: travel from Los Angeles to Canada, through British Columbia to Banff; ACC camp at Glacier, B.C.; trip from India to Canada; life in Banff; trips and ACC camps in the Rockies, Selkirks and Kootenay district; ACC activities and operations; travels in the Okanagan, Kootenays and Columbia Valley, BC. Also included in this series are two diaries of his wife Dorothea. - Gilbert M. Atkin, 1877-1969, came to Banff in 1905 shortly after completion of postgraduate studies in medicine. He first worked with Dr. Brett and continued to practice medicine in Banff, where he raised his family. During the First World War, Atkin served in the Canadian Army Medical Corps.

- John (Jack) Hewiston Hayes, 1921-1993, was a ski instructor, soldier and businessman at Banff, Alberta, Canada. Hayes came to Banff from England as a small child. In 1936 he worked for Brewster Transport as a pony boy and became a driver in 1939. In 1941, he joined the Royal Air Force, Squadron 254, training in Canada at Claresholm, Alberta and elsewhere. Beginning July 1943, Hayes served on over 50 flying missions oversees and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in May 1944. After the war he resumed his career with Brewster Transport, eventually becoming President. In 1978 he went into business with the purchase of the Jasper Sky Tram. Hayes retired in 1980.
