Description
A well-worn, light brown, felt cowboy hat with a crease in the the crown and a turned-up brim on both sides. The sweatband is missing, in its stead are the remnants of thread and glue with holes punched in at intervals where a cord is threaded through so the hat will stay on the head. There is an oval of white glue on the inside crown where a label may have been. There is also the remnants of a paper label from Smithbilt hats (2.3x1.0cm wide) in white with blue outline and lettering “BILT”. There are three brands marked on the hat: Albert Johnston’s, on the back, of an “R and half-circle” (2.4cm); from the front, viewer’s right, a “Y” (3.2x3.0cm wide) with a straight line underneath (the threaded gold cord is tied directly under this); on the opposite side, viewer’s left, is a drawing of a broken ski pole (2.5x2.8cm wide) that is Erling Strom’s brand. There are chew marks on the brim, a large one 6.0 long and up to 1.0cm deep, 4.0cm to the left of this is another chew mark 0.50cm and a tear 1.0cm.

Left side tops of cliff yellow and orange. while slopes going down towards lake are purple. Centre of image is white to represent snow or a glacier. At bottom of painting on both right and left trees are represented. A blue lake lies at the bottom of the painting below Assiniboine. Strip of green and brown land at the bottom as well. Brushstrokes are think and very visible.

Personal diary pertaining to packing and leaving from Dehra Dun, travel to Bombay with leisure and description of travel mates, travel on ship S. S. Dunera and description of passengers. Daytrip in Columbo, travel through Singapore, Hong Kong, interaction with Prince and Princess of Barcleu [?]. Police and Doctors in Nagasaki performed extensive examinations.
Uneventful crossing to Victoria, drive to Sidney. Leisure, dances, lunches, theatre. Trip to Vancouver, Walhachin, stayed with friends in Shaughnessy Heights, visited Jerico Club. Trip to Jasper via Prince Rupert, hiking, camping, Fortress Lake, Snow Creek.
Travel from Jasper to Banff, through Edmonton and Calgary. Stayed at Alpine Club House in Banff, which was busy because of poor weather at Assiniboine. Climbed Mt. Edith, stayed at Sunshine Camp, Golden Valley, Assiniboine. Picture glued in of Lake Magog, annotated with mountain peaks. Banff, climbed Rundle, leisure, staying at clubhouse, picnic on Bow river, Sulphur Mountain climb.
Travel from Banff to Winnipeg to Toronto, to Ottawa, Montreal, New York, board ship S. S. Baltic to Liverpool. Trip into London, dealing with clothing, camera, surveying equipment, trips to India Office, leisure with Dolly. Boat trip to Venice, trip to Suez, to Bombay and return to Dehra Dun. "Altogether a most excellent leave, though somewhat expensive!"

Leisure in Resthaven, Middle Springs Camp in Banff, honorary member of ACC, Assiniboine, ACC Club House.
Significant gap in text, beginning again three months later in Sidney, travelling to Vancouver. Winnipeg to Ottawa, to Kingston, to Toronto. Ten days of leisure in Toronto, four days in Cleveland, visit with friends in Washington, DC, trip to New York, Ottawa, boat trip on S. S. Montclare, trip to Birmingham with Dolly, travel around England, leisure, return to Canada with Dolly, docked in Montreal, travel to Ottawa, from Toronto to Banff.
Banff for ten days, visits mother's grave, chores. Karmax and K2. Trip to Vancouver, leisure, return to Sidney, auditing and balance sheets. Rough trip back with Dolly from Victoria to Yokohama. Recent earthquake in Yokohama, description of city's destruction. Travel back through Nagasaki, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Singapore, return to Calcutta.
