- A Candle Lamp for use in a dark room. The foundation of the Candle Lamp consists of a square metal base (a) (8.5 X 8.5 X0.9 cm), which contains a raised circular ring that serves to hold the candle (b) (4.0 cm diameter X 1.0 cm height) in place. Once the lit candle is mounted on the metal base, the collapsible red canvas housing (c) (15.2 X 8.0 X 0.5 cm) is raised around it and another square metal piece (d) (8.7 X 8.8 X0.7 cm) is placed on top. The top piece functions as a chimney and has circular opening in the center, allowing smoke to exit and air to enter the lamp in order to fuel the flame.Centered near the top on one face of the red canvas housing there is black text that reads: “THE KODAK CANDLE LAMP”; “MADE IN U.S.A. BY THE EASTMAN KODAK COMPANY ROCHESTER. N.Y”. At the bottom of this face, on the metal frame, is a silver sticker with a black border and black text that reads: “SOLE(?) DISTRIBUTOR(?) IN CANADA CANADIAN KODAK CO., LIMITED”. In the 1914 issue of the Kodak Catalogue, the cost of this candle lamp was $0.25.

- The index typewriter consists of a circular, rotatable metal disk, which is mounted on a red metal component. The metal components of the typewriter which hold the paper in place and advance the cartridge forward are mounted on a rectangular wooden base, which is painted red. The cartridge is mounted along the back edge of the red wooden base. The various metal components of the typewriter are painted black, red, or green.The outer rim of the rotatable disk contains the “keys”, which are made of a soft rubber. When the key that is oriented at the top-center of the disk is pressed down, it produces that letter or character onto the paper. Also, when a button is pressed, a device pushes the cartridge forward one space, so that the next letter/character can be typed. Each button is labeled with a corresponding letter/character in black ink around the edge. The letters are all in capitals, and are not in alphabetical order. The letters appear on the disk in the following order: “C J P F U B L W T H E R O I A N D G S K Y M Q V X Z”. The characters labeled on the disk then proceed in following order: “, . - ? $ 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 &”Underneath the rubber buttons, also following the curvature of the disk, reads: “GERMAN PATENT NO. XXXX” (X = the number is unreadable); “FRENCH PATENT NO. 269727”; “OTHER FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC PATENTS PENDING”; “UNITED STATES PATENT MARCH 21 1899(?)”; “BRITISH PATENT NO. 1XXX1” (X = the number is unreadable).The center of the disk is painted red, with a green circular boarder. The top of this area reads: “SPECIAL”. In the very center of this area reads: “Simplex TRADEMARK Typewriter” in white letters on a green banner. Underneath this banner is a red “1”, which is enclosed in a black circle. Beneath this, in black ink, it reads: “MANUFACTUERS AND PATENTS,” “SIMPLEX TYPEWRITER CO., COR.FIRST AVE.AND 37TH ST.,NEW YORK.U.S.A.”The metal disk can be lifted upwards, so that it becomes almost vertical, in order for paper to be loaded into the typewriter.On the cartridge along the back edge of the wooden base is a white measuring strip, labeled 0-64 (going up by 2’s) in black ink, with black vertical lines denoting measurements (1 cm = 4 units of measure on strip, therefore, the 64 units of measure on the strip correspond with 16cm).

- One red-painted Trulite kerosene lantern. The lantern’s glass is a “short globe” one, a design that emerged around 1913 that made the globe easier to clean and less likely to crack. This lantern is possibly one of the earlier Trulite designs as its chimney lifts up away from the globe instead of down, a feature that proved unpopular and was quickly fazed out. In addition to the rising chimney, the globe can also be rotated to the side by pulling a small lever. Inside the globe are two unused wicks, one of which is free-floating. “MADE IN CANADA” is molded into the globe and “Trulite” is faintly visible on the chimney.

- One black metal Armspear “1925” railway signal lantern with a beveled red glass globe. Imprinted on the top of the chimney is “ARMSPEAR M’F’G. CO. NEW YORK ‘1925’” and on the wide rim below that is “A.C.L” - meaning that this lantern belonged to the Atlantic Coast Line railroad of Southeastern United States. The body of the lantern is surrounded by a thick wire cage onto which the carry handle is also attached. The lantern’s chimney lifts away from the globe on a hinge, revealing a used wick inside - the wick can be lowered or raised by turning a small round key in the lower part of the lantern. The red glass would have been used by rail lines to signal a stop or danger on the track before the introduction of wireless radio communication.

- An Underwood No. 5 typewriter with a black body and a QWERTY keyboard containing 84 characters. The keyboard is a four-bank keyboard, with a single shift key. The characters on the keys are white on a black background. There is also a switch with a red and black key on the viewer-left side above the keyboard, which determines whether the characters will transcribe on the paper in red or black ink. The typewriter uses ribbon inking, and the red-black ribbon is still present and visible in the machine.The typebars pass through a U-shaped slotted segment, which is visible above the keyboard. In-between the keyboard and this U-shaped slotted segment, on the front face of the typewriter, it reads “UNDERWOOD” in gold lettering with a blue outline. The typewriter contains is a frontstroke mechanism; therefore the typebars hit the front of the platen when they are struck, making the text immediately visible to the typist. There is a piece of paper rolled onto the platten, and it contains many small circular dents and ink marks, including the text “tter” in black ink on the viewer-right side. The papertable contains the word: “Underwood” in gold lettering. Located directly to the viewer-left of this text is a gold and blue outlined Underwood crest with a red background that is formed from the overlapping letters “U” and “T”. The centre of the crest contains an image of an Underwood typewriter, underneath of which the words “TRADE” “MARK.” appear in a small, black font. Beneath the crest it reads “MADE IN U.S.A.” in gold text.On the viewer-right face of the typewriter, “1949352-5” is etched into a small rectangular plaque on the body of the machine.
