Photograph Album: 1 photograph album (73 b&w prints)
Scope & Content
Album contains 73 b&w photographs, pasted in, captioned. Photographs pertain to Medicine Hat, Alberta; the Rocky Mountains and the Canadian Pacific Railway; Banff National park; the Kicking Horse and Columbia Rivers; Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia; Mariposa County, California; Mount Shasta; Yosemite National Park, California; Salt Lake City, Utah; Muir's Glacier, Alaska. Subjects include numerous views of railway infrastructure of the Canadian Pacific Railway and the Oregon and California Rail Road (O & C.R.R.), images of ferries and steamers, mountains, waterfalls, bays, and other ‘natural wonders’ like the giant Sequoia trees of California, cedar trees in Vancouver’s Stanley Park. The album also contains photographs of Victoria, Seattle, and Tacoma, Washington. The album was most likely assembled by an unknown traveller. The photographs were taken by professional Canadian photographers A. B. Thom (1849-1926) and C. S. Bailey (1869-1896), and American photographers Isaiah West Taber (1830-1912), George Fiske (1835-1918), C. R. Savage (1832-1909), and possibly Carleton E. Watkins (1829-1916). For more information regarding the photographers, see scope 2B. 25 photographs have no author referenced in the album. Prints on pages 2, 5, 6, 8, 12, 17, and 18 have been attributed to A.B. Thom through consultation of captions and catalogue numbers found through the Manitoba Historical Society. Prints on pages 26 - 30, and 32 have been attributed to C.S. Bailey through matching the catalogue numbers and captions on the print with the catalogue numbers of the photographer found in a 1889 catalogue. Prints on pages 20 - 25 may be attributed to Carleton E. Watkins (see scope 2B). Square brackets in list below indicate attribution made by archives staff. Page Photographer Image # Caption: 1 A.B. Content Details
Alexander Barton Thom (1849-1926) was predominantly a landscape photographer working mostly out Winnipeg, Manitoba but was to known to travel extensively. In 1886, he took over 2000 photographs along the Canadian Pacific Railway. Thom took photographs of the rocky mountain landscape found along the tracks of the CPR and in the towns along the way (in the case of this album - Banff and views of the Bow Valley from Banff), as well as railway infrastructure including bridges, loops, and tunnels. Thom travelled during the winters of 1885 through 1889; he spent his time travelling through the USA and England. During these travels, Thom would give illustrated lectures using his photographs. Since Thom believed that his presentations and images were benefiting the CPR and Canadian immigration, he requested that the CPR provide a photographic car on the train that could be a portable photographic studio. Found in the Canadian Pacific Archives was a letter from Thom requesting the CPR add a photographic car to the CPR. There is however no record of a reply to Thom’s request. Apparently, the impetus for Thom requesting the portable photographic studio was not only his perceived benefits of the photographs for immigration purposes but that Thom wanted to make a series of 21x25 views on glass plates. Having a portable studio on the rails would make the processing and developing images of this size much easier for the photographer. Other archival holdings of Thom’s work include an album housed at the McCord Museum in Montreal, which formerly belonged to Canadian Pacific Railway historian Omer Lavallee. This album was compiled circa 1888 in Winnipeg - possibly for William Whyte who was the Western Superintendent of the CPR. After his time traveling extensively, Thom owned and operated several photographic studios in Manitoba from 1891 to 1900 and retired from photography in 1904. More information pertaining to Thom can be found through the Manitoba Historical Society. Charles S. Bailey (1869-1896) born in Creemore, Ontario, was an active professional photographer from 1887 until his death in 1896. Originally based out of Vancouver from 1887 to 1895, Bailey is well known as a landscape photographer. Twelve of Bailey’s views can be found in this album. The views in this album are very significant because of Bailey’s untimely death at 27 years of age. The view numbers of the photographs in this album can be matched with those found in the catalogue "Bailey and Neelands: Views Along the Canadian Pacific Railway," which was published in 1889 in Vancouver by Bailey and Neelands. He later moved to Kamloops, BC and has been credited with managing a branch of the Bailey Brothers Store Ltd. It has also been speculated that he was one of the first photographers to visit Hawaii in January to May 1895. Bailey’s photographs and prints will hold the markers: C.S. Bailey, Bailey & Neelands, or Bailey Bros. Information pertaining Bailey can be found in the City of Vancouver Archives. Isaiah West Taber (1830-1912) began working in a California photographic studio in 1864 and opened his own gallery in 1875. Taber is known for his views of California and the San Francisco area. After the bankruptcy of photographer Carleton E. Watkins in 1875, Taber bought Watkins’ Yosemite gallery and began marketing Watkins’ stereoviews under his own I.W. Taber label while keeping Watkins’ original view numbers. In 1906, at the time of the San Francisco earthquake, he lost his gallery and negative collection. At this time Taber was 76 years old and this loss marked the end of his photographic career. Because of this loss of his gallery and negatives the 29 views that can be seen in this album are parts of the remaining, rare Taber works that are circulating. Through the cross referencing of the Watkins views numbers with Taber’s, none of the Watkins views owned by Taber seem to appear in this album. George Fiske (1835-1918), a professional American photographer known for his views of the Yosemite Valley is represented in this album by five photographs in and around Mariposa Grove and San Francisco California. Fiske worked as an assistant to photographer Carleton E. Watkins. A year following Watkins’ bankruptcy, Fiske moved to Yosemite was the first photographer to be a year round resident of the Valley. Tragically, in 1904, Fiske’s home and studio was destroyed by fire. Along with the home and studio, the fire also destroyed three quarters of his glass-plate negatives, two cameras, two lenses, and large portion of his stock prints. Again, in 1943, a second fire destroyed his remaining glass-plate negatives. The second fire occurred in the sawmill of the Yosemite Company where Fiske’s negatives were being stored. Fiske’s work had caught the eye of a young Ansel Adams, who had made prints from Fiske remaining negatives prior to the fire. Adams warned of the possible demise of Fiske’s remaining work but nothing was done and they were lost. In light of the destruction of Fiske’s negatives and stock collection, the five photographic prints in the Canada and America Album of a great historical significance. More about Fiske can be found in the publication The life and Photographic Works of George Fiske, 1835-1918 (1979) by Paul Hickman and the publication Yosemite Photographer (1980) by Paul Hickman and Terence Pitts. Charles Roscoe Savage (1832-1909) was a prominent landscape and portrait photographer based out of Salt Lake City, Utah. Savage is best known as one of three photographers present at the joining of the rails at Promontory, Utah in 1869 (Andrew J. Russell and Alfred A. Hart being the other two). Savage photographed mostly Salt Lake City, Utah, and California. He was also known to have been the premier photographer of LDS (Latter Day Saints) church leaders. Savage owned the ‘Pioneer Art Gallery’ from 1870 until 1875 when he opened a larger space and he opened his ‘Art Bazaar.’ In June of 1883, the ‘Art Bazaar’ burned to the ground and all of his negatives were destroyed. After his death, another fire in 1911 destroyed the negatives from the last 25 years of his life. Like the other photographers in this album who had their collections destroyed, the photographs, stereographs, cabinet cards, etc. that remain are originals and therefore rare. The largest collection (839 images total) of Savage’s views is held in The Brigham Young University Collection in Utah. This collection does not, however, hold the photographers original numbering system. Carleton E. Watkins (1829-1916) born in Oneota, New York began his photographic career in San Francisco in 1854 and went on to be one of the most well known photographers of the Yosemite Valley. The locations Watkins photographed spanned from Tombstone, Arizona to Victoria, British Columbia. He was also commissioned over the span of his career to document mining works in California and Oregon, various subjects for the California Geological survey. His mining views from the Mariposa area were exhibited in London in 1862. The year previous, Watkins traveled to Yosemite were he made thirty mammoth photographs and one hundred stereographs of the Yosemite Valley and Mariposa grove. In 1864, Watkins views of Yosemite proved influential in the United States congress to pass legislation to preserve the Yosemite Valley. Watkins owned and operated the ‘Yosemite Gallery’ in San Francisco out of which his sold his photographic products. In 1875, after a series of business decisions that put Watkins in financial jeopardy, over production of his stereoviews by eastern publishers, and an economic slump in San Francisco, Watkins’ loan from John Jay Cook was foreclosed on and Watkins was forced into bankruptcy. In the bankruptcy Watkins lost the gallery and its holdings, which was all of his negatives, his collection of prints, and all of the photographic equipment. Cook, in association with photographer I.W. Taber subsequently ran the gallery. Taber began selling Watkins’ photographs and stereoviews under the Taber label but maintained Watkins’ original view numbers. Following this Watkins attempted to rebuild the lost negatives but failed to regain financial stability. During the San Francisco earthquake and subsequent fire in 1906, Watkins lost everything. The largest holdings of Watkins’ work can be found at the Bancroft library at the University of California, the California State library, Huntington library, the Library of Congress, and Stanford University. A series of the unknown photographs in this album may be attributed to Watkins (pages 20-25). One image in particular (in the album captioned as ‘Tacoma’ by the album’s author on page 25) has been matched to a Watkins image that is held in the photographic collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art titled “New Tacoma, Washington, Puget Sound, 1882; albumen print.”
